Primarily Monday-Friday Primary Student-Athlete Training Window:
12:00 PM-6:00 PM Some mid-morning sessions and occasional special-event weekends may be available. Position Overview Morton College Fitness Center is seeking a motivated, knowledgeable, and highly professional Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach to assist with the development and delivery of our collegiate sports performance program. This is an excellent opportunity for a coach looking to gain meaningful hands-on experience working directly with collegiate student-athletes while continuing to develop professionally in the strength & conditioning and sports performance field. The Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach will work alongside the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach to coach individual and team training sessions, teach proper movement and lifting technique, assist with athlete testing and monitoring, and help maintain a high-performance training environment. Coaches who demonstrate strong performance, reliability, and leadership may have opportunities to take on additional student-athlete sessions, one-on-one performance coaching and DENX group training sessions , creating the potential for increased coaching hours and compensation. Responsibilities Coach and assist with strength & conditioning sessions for collegiate student-athletes across multiple sports. Deliver training programs in accordance with the philosophy and programming established by the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach. Teach, demonstrate, and reinforce proper technique for resistance training, Olympic lifting progressions, plyometrics, sprinting, agility, change of direction, mobility, conditioning, and other sports-performance methods. Create or assist with evidence-based, periodized strength & conditioning programs when assigned. Provide appropriate exercise progressions, regressions, and modifications based on athlete readiness and training goals. Assist with speed, acceleration, multidirectional movement, power, strength, conditioning, mobility, and recovery development. Supervise student-athletes and maintain a safe, organized, energetic, and professional training environment. Assist with athlete performance testing, data collection, evaluation, and progress tracking. Help monitor training quality, athlete effort, technique, and overall physical development. Communicate effectively with the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach, sport coaches, athletic training/sports medicine personnel, student-athletes, and other staff. Collaborate with sports medicine personnel regarding appropriate training modifications and return-to-performance progressions when directed. Assist with equipment organization, facility upkeep, equipment maintenance, and daily performance-center operations. Follow all Morton College policies, safety procedures, professional standards, and applicable athletic-association rules. Represent Morton College and the strength & conditioning program with professionalism, integrity, enthusiasm, and a student-athlete-first approach. Participate in occasional testing days, athletic events, performance challenges, camps, or special events when available. Complete additional sports-performance responsibilities as assigned based on experience and qualifications. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Strength & Conditioning, Sports Performance, Exercise Physiology, Athletic Performance , or a closely related field; exceptional candidates completing a relevant degree may be considered for developmental assistant assignments. Current CPR/AED certification . Strong working knowledge of strength training, exercise technique, biomechanics, sports performance, and athlete safety. Ability to confidently demonstrate and coach foundational strength & conditioning movements. Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively coach both individual athletes and groups of student-athletes. Ability to accept feedback, follow established programming and coaching standards, and work collaboratively within a performance staff. Demonstrated professionalism, dependability, organization, and attention to detail. Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries when working with collegiate student-athletes. Ability to safely perform and demonstrate the physical requirements associated with strength & conditioning coaching. Certification Expectations One or more of the following is highly preferred: NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) CSCCa Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) USA Weightlifting certification Other nationally recognized strength, conditioning, sports-performance or personal/group training certification Candidates actively pursuing a certification may also be considered depending on education and practical coaching experience. Independent programming responsibilities and lead-team assignments may require
CSCS/SCCC
certification or equivalent demonstrated qualifications. Preferred Qualifications 1+ years of practical strength & conditioning or sports-performance coaching experience. Previous experience in a collegiate strength & conditioning environment as a coach, graduate assistant, intern, or student assistant. Experience coaching collegiate, professional, high school, or competitive athletes. Experience developing sport-specific and periodized training programs. Experience with athlete performance testing and monitoring. Experience with force plates, jump testing, velocity-based training, timing systems, or other sports-performance technology. Experience coaching speed, agility, plyometrics, Olympic lifting, and multidirectional movement. Experience coaching multiple sports and adapting training programs to different athletic demands. Former collegiate student-athletes with appropriate coaching qualifications are encouraged to apply. Desire to pursue a long-term career in collegiate strength & conditioning, sports performance, fitness, or coaching. Schedule & Availability This is a flexible, part-time contractor position averaging approximately 8-30 hours per week , depending on coach availability, athletic schedules, performance, and department needs. Most collegiate student-athlete training sessions are scheduled: Monday-Friday | 12:00 PM-6:00 PM There are occasional mid-morning training sessions based on team schedules. Weekend availability is generally not required , outside of occasional special events, testing days, competitions, camps, or other pre-scheduled opportunities. Candidates do not necessarily need to be available for the entire 12:00-6:00 PM window. Strong applicants with consistent availability within portions of this training window are encouraged to apply.
