Role:
Support students with disabilities by identifying, implementing, and maintaining assistive technology tools that promote access to curriculum, communication, and functional independence. You'll conduct AT assessments, recommend devices and accommodations, and train staff and families. This role collaborates closely with teachers, related service providers, and IEP teams to ensure students receive appropriate AT services aligned with their IEPs.

Assistive Technology Specialist Key Responsibilities:
Assessments & Recommendations:
Conduct comprehensive assistive technology assessments for students in general and special education settings. Recommend AT devices, software, and accommodations that support communication, academic access, sensory needs, and functional skills.
IEP Participation:
Attend IEP meetings, present assessment findings, and help teams determine appropriate AT supports.
Training & Consultation:
Train teachers, staff, and families on AT tools, including communication devices, software applications, adaptive equipment, and accessibility features. Collaborate with SLPs, OTs, teachers, and psychologists to integrate AT into each student's educational program.
Device Support & Inventory:
Provide ongoing support and troubleshooting to keep equipment maintained and functional. Assist with managing the district's AT inventory, including device checkout and tracking.
Accessible Materials:
Support the development of accessible instructional materials such as digital texts, modified worksheets, and alternative formats.
Data Collection & Documentation:
Maintain documentation, usage logs, and progress data related to AT implementation.
Professional Growth:
Stay informed on emerging AT tools, technology trends, and evidence-based practices.
Assistive Technology Specialist Qualifications:
Assistive Technology Applications Certificate Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree in Special Education, Speech-Language Pathology, Occupational Therapy, or Assistive Technology Experience in school settings preferred
Knowledge:
Familiarity with AT tools including AAC devices, switch-access equipment, screen readers, communication apps, and educational software. Ability to interpret assessment data and make evidence-based recommendations.
Clearances:
DOJ/FBI Livescan background check. Must be eligible to work in the US.
Skills:
Strong communication and training skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
Travel:
Comfortable providing services across multiple school sites within Alameda County.
Assistive Technology Specialist Physical Demands:
Schedule:
School-based schedule with travel between sites
Population:
Working closely with students in grades TK-12 and special education teams
Environment:
Occasional exposure to dust, pollen, and fumes.
Activity:
Frequent engagement in tasks such as reaching, handling, standing, walking, and lifting items up to 50 lbs, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Ability to perform essential job functions with or without assistive devices or accommodations, including working in moderate to high noise levels.
