Instructor of Technical Direction
Job Description
The University of Montevallo's College of Fine Arts invites applicants for a full-time Instructor in Technical Direction beginning Fall 2027. The ideal candidate should be proficient in theatrical building techniques, woodworking, welding, rigging, and computer aided drafting, and possess strong project management and leadership skills. The Technical Director should have expertise in traditional craft and contemporary entertainment technology. The primary teaching responsibilities of this position are Stagecraft I, Stagecraft II, Theatre Practicum, and/or other courses based on departmental needs and areas of specialty. Essential Job Duties Teach and mentor students in hands on construction. Set and enforce best safety practices and set safe-use guidelines for use of all equipment and tools. Oversee the construction and installation of all technical elements for assigned productions, ensuring they are built to design specifications, within budget, and on schedule, while maintaining the highest standards of safety and craftsmanship. Oversee the strike of all technical elements for the Theatre program's season. Daily operation, organization, and management of the scene shop. Coordinate all technical needs for the Theatre program. Communicate theatrical inventory and maintenance needs to the Director of Operations for the Alan and Lindsey Song Center for the Arts. Create build schedules for each Theatre production. Attend all technical rehearsals for productions. Supervise student and work study crews to build scenic elements. Advise production managers, directors, and designers on feasibility, cost, and equipment capabilities. Attend all Theatre program production meetings. Develop technical drafts from designer drawings. Participate in Theatre program recruitment activities. Education and Experience Master's degree in Theatre or a related field. Teaching experience at the collegiate level or significant and clearly demonstrated professional experience in instruction and/or mentoring. Professional theatrical production experience Preferred Education and Experience MFA in Technical Direction or related field. Experience in sound Experience in Qlab Proficiency in Vectorworks Additional materials may be requested in later rounds of the application process.
