Full-time NTT Lecturer of Japanese Language & Culture Posting Details Position will be posted for a minimum of one week, after which it is subject to removal without notice. Advertising Copy The School of World Languages and Cultures at the University of Vermont invites applications for a full-time position as a lecturer of Japanese language and culture, beginning in Fall 2027 (Anticipated start date: August 23, 2027; classes begin 08/30/2027). The position is for Academic Year 2027-28, with the possibility of renewal. Applicants must have an M.A. (a Ph.D. is preferred) in Japanese language pedagogy or a related area, native or near-native fluency in both Japanese and English, and at least two years of experience teaching Japanese to college students in North America. Responsibilities include teaching Japanese at all levels and, when needed, courses conducted in English on topics such as Japanese cinema, anime, or visual culture, both for the major and minor in Japanese and venues such as first-year seminars in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Honors College; organizing extracurricular Japanese language and cultural activities; and actively engaging in Japanese Program matters by working cooperatively with other faculty members and students. Formed in 2023, UVM's School of World Languages and Cultures offers instruction in ten languages plus Linguistics, grouped in six programs. The School of World Languages and Cultures (SWLC) prepares students to engage with a diverse, globalizing, and ever-changing world. Students learn to speak and understand foreign languages, study how languages are learned, and (if desired) explore how to teach language to non-native speakers. Students also become knowledgeable about and sensitive to cultural differences through exposure to the perspectives of people who speak other languages, enabling them to reflect critically on their own cultural practices.
