The Dean of Student Support and Discipline serves a key leadership role within the school, working collaboratively with teachers, counselors, social workers, and administrators to foster a positive and supportive learning environment. This position promotes student growth by reinforcing positive behavior, ensuring accountability, and guiding implementation of restorative practices. The Dean receives specialized training in restorative approaches and is responsible for supporting and training staff in these methods. Additionally, the role manages student code of conduct matters, including investigations, disciplinary procedures, bullying prevention and response, and compliance with federal mandates such as Title IX. This position is essential to maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive school climate.
Qualifications Required:
Bachelor's degree in education, social work, psychology, or a related field. Teaching certificate or eligibility for certification by the Florida Department of Education. Demonstrated experience working with children in a school setting. Commitment to restorative practices and child-centered discipline models. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build relationships with students, staff, and families. The ability to have hard conversations and maintain privacy.
Preferred:
Master's degree in education, counseling, school leadership, or related field. Ed Leadership Certificate or eligibility for certification by the Florida Department of Education. Experience in a Montessori or progressive education environment. Prior training or certification in restorative justice/practices. Familiarity with public school behavioral policies, special education law, and student rights (including Title IX compliance). Essential Duties and Responsibilities Restorative Practices and Student Support Become trained in restorative practices and implement these principles in day-to-day interactions with students and staff. Coach and support staff in using restorative approaches to classroom management and conflict resolution. Collaborate with classroom teachers, the school counselor, and social worker to respond to student behavior in ways that are developmentally appropriate and aligned with Montessori values. Facilitate restorative circles, conferences, and re-entry meetings as needed. Behavioral Interventions and Code of Conduct Serve as the school's Behavior Designee and assume all required training for and responsibilities of that role. Serve as a resource for staff and students regarding the school's behavior expectations and policies. Manage incidents of student misconduct in alignment with the school and district's Code of Conduct, emphasizing reflection, restoration, and growth. Maintain discipline records and oversee traditional discipline processes including in-school and out-of-school suspensions, expulsions, and behavior agreements. Ensure that disciplinary procedures are fair, consistent, and legally compliant. Compliance and Investigations Conduct investigations related to bullying, harassment, and other code of conduct violations. Serve as the school's lead investigator for Title IX concerns and ensure timely, thorough, and confidential documentation. Monitor trends in student behavior and provide regular reports to the administration. Family and Community Engagement Communicate regularly and effectively with families regarding behavioral incidents, disciplinary consequences, progress, and support strategies. Partner with the school's counselor, social worker, teachers and staffing specialist to co-develop behavior support plans when needed. School Operations Participate in school-wide duties such as arrival/dismissal (car line), and staff coverage as needed. Support school safety procedures and emergency response protocols. Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or administrative team.
Physical Requirements/Activity:
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently. The position requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, lift (up to 20 pounds), finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing acuity, and visual acuity.
Indoor and Outdoor:
This position is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.
