The Role Memorial University is seeking a dynamicleader to be our new Deputy Provost (MarineInstitute) & Executive Director(Professional and Continuing Education). This is a unique opportunity to serveas a key member of MemorialUniversity's senior leadership team, providingexecutive leadership for the Marine Institute—one of Memorial's fivecampuses—while alsoadvancing innovation in Professional and ContinuingEducation across the institution's multi-campus system. Reporting to theProvost, theDeputy Provost (Marine Institute) & Executive Director(Professional and Continuing Education) holds overall responsibility for theMarineInstitute campus, including financial and operational performance,strategic direction, and organizational effectiveness. The role providesexecutive oversight of all Marine Institute operations, leads externalrelations, and serves as a principal ambassador for the Institute. Working in close partnership with industry,government, and academic colleagues, the Deputy Provost collaborates withsenior leadersacross Memorial University and engages broadly with externalstakeholders and partners to advance institutional priorities, strengthenpartnerships, and expand the impact of both the Marine Institute and MemorialUniversity globally. Building on the Institute's longstandingsuccess inproviding first-rate industry training and upskilling, the role also leads thedevelopment and delivery of Professional andContinuing Education initiativesacross Memorial's multi-campus ecosystem, ensuring alignment with institutionalpriorities, communityneeds, and emerging labour-market opportunities. The Deputy Provost fosters an inclusive environmentthat supports faculty, staff,and students and encourages a culture of academicexcellence, research impact, student success, community engagement, and respectfor place.
Key Areas of Leadership andOversight Institutional and Academic Leadership:
Serves as a key member ofMemorial's senior leadership team,contributing to the development of the university's vision and priorities andleading the effectiveimplementation of institutional strategies. Contributesto the development and execution of strategic initiatives and academic andindustrypriorities at the Marine Institute. Provides leadership toschool heads, instructors, and staff across the Marine Institute, ensuring theeffective delivery of its academic, training, and research mandate in alignmentwith the university's mission. Oversees and ensurescompliance withacademic regulations, government requirements, ISO 9001 certification, andaccreditation standards. Supports evidence-baseddecision-making,academic planning and program development and delivery; advances strategicenrolment and retention initiatives; andstrengthens teaching and learning. Fostersfaculty and staff development and mentoring, and addresses personnel matterswith fairness,effectiveness, and respect, while ensuring effective workplacerelations through the consistent application of collective agreements andinstitutional policies and procedures. Promotes student success,including through meaningful and deliberate engagement with Indigenouscommunities. Supports positive academic outcomes by building strongrelationships with the student body, enhancing the student experience,andmaintaining a visible and engaged presence within the Institute. Research Leadership:
Advances scientific, industry, and student research priorities at theMarine Institute, specifically in areas of Fisheries, MaritimeStudies, andOcean Technologies. Works with researchers to build capacity and enableworld-class research and research collaborations.
Develops researchfunding opportunities for researchers, aligning research activity withinstitutional priorities and industry and broadersector opportunities. Strengthensthe dissemination and impact of research outputs by supporting publication,knowledge mobilization, andresearcher participation in national andinternational academic and industry forums. Expands opportunities for Indigenous-ledand graduateresearch by supporting the development of research-based programsand securing funding through external partnerships and funding agencies.
Industry Relationships andExternal Partnerships :
Drivesinnovation, development, and collaboration in the oceanindustries. Worksclosely with the Marine Institute's Industry Advisory Board to ensure sectorpriorities are effectively advanced.
Collaborates with communitycolleges, federal and provincial development agencies, Indigenous communitiesand organizations, and otherexternal groups on matters of shared interest.
Builds new strategic partnerships and collaborations by leveraging existingrelationships.
Promotes and capitalizes on the Marine Institute's specializedtraining facilities and applied research centres.
Professional andContinuingEducation:
Leads the development and implementation of aProfessional and Continuing Education strategy for the wholeinstitutionaligned with Memorial's broad priorities, community needs, and labour marketdemand. Supports the development of new non-creditand credit programsin the lifelong learning space. Identifies and advances emergingopportunities in professional, online, and hybridprogramming, ensuringacademic integrity and accessibility while maintaining the flexibility requiredto meet the needs of adult, part-time,and working learners.
Operational Management andFinance :
Leadsfinancial management and budgeting processes of theMarine Institute, ensuringeffective planning, robust oversight, and the efficient use of human,financial, information, and infrastructureresources. Leads majorinstitutional change processes, including program development, academicrestructuring, and academic reviews, amongother initiatives. Providesstrategic oversight of resource allocation within a complex budgetaryenvironment, balancing financial andoperational priorities and ensuringeffective risk management. Advances institutional goals and prioritiesrelated to accessibility,Indigenization and equity, diversity, inclusion, andanti-racism (EDI-AR), embedding these principles in strategy, policy, andpractice.
Identifies and develops new revenue streams. The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is a strategic andcollaborativeacademic leader who brings a demonstrated ability to navigatecomplex organizational environments while building strong relationships acrossacademic, industry, government, and community sectors. They are an effectivecommunicator, capable of balancing consultation with decisiveleadership, andare committed to advancing academic excellence, research impact, innovation,student success, and organizationaleffectiveness. Qualifications and Experience While the Search Committee recognizes that noone candidate is likelyto meet all qualifications in equal measure, thoselisted below are desirable and will be used to compare candidates. Earned doctorate or terminal degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent professional experience in an academic context ispreferred. Significant senior leadership experience, including demonstrated financial and organizational expertiseand the ability to balance consultationwith sound decision-making. Demonstrated experience in academic governance and facultyaffairs. Experience in supporting industry-driven curriculum and program delivery. Proven track record ofengagement with industry partners. Significant experience with budget management and institutional planning. Demonstrated leadership experience in EDI-AR and/or Indigenization in an academic context. Familiarity withaccreditation processes and regulatory environments. Experience managing large teams and leading complex change initiatives.
