High School of Applied Communication seeks a dedicated, certified Special Education Teacher passionate about the humanities to provide specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with general education English Language Arts (ELA) and Social Studies teachers, related service providers, and families to develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) that address the unique learning needs of students in these content areas. The teacher will create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that fosters academic growth, independence, and a commitment to critical reading, historical inquiry, and analytical writing.

Responsibilities:

IEP Development and Implementation:

Participate in developing, reviewing, and revising Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities, focusing on their literacy, writing, and social studies goals alongside necessary accommodations. Implement IEPs effectively, providing specially designed instruction and accommodations within the general education ELA or Social Studies classroom, an Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) setting, or a specialized instructional setting, as appropriate. Collaborate with general education teachers to modify and adapt curriculum, complex texts, and instructional strategies to ensure accessibility and engagement for students with disabilities. Provide direct and indirect support to students with disabilities to facilitate their participation and progress in humanities coursework. Monitor student progress towards IEP goals and objectives, collecting and analyzing data to inform instruction and IEP modifications. Instructional Delivery (ELA & Social Studies Focus): Provide specially designed instruction in high school subjects (e.g., English, Global History, U.S. History, Government) aligned with the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards and NYC Public Schools curriculum frameworks. Utilize various evidence-based instructional strategies—including school-wide morphology vocabulary acquisition strategies—to address diverse learning styles and literacy needs. Integrate assistive and collaborative digital tools, such as CoTeach.ai, to enhance accessibility and scaffold learning. Develop and implement differentiated lessons and activities that promote conceptual understanding, evidence-based writing, document analysis, and historical inquiry. Adapt and modify text analysis, research projects, and document-based questions (DBQs) to ensure meaningful student participation. Foster an engaging learning environment that encourages student discourse, critical thinking, and a positive attitude towards the humanities.

Collaboration and Communication:

Collaborate effectively with general education teachers through proactive co-planning and the implementation of robust ICT models, specifically utilizing Parallel Teaching and Station Teaching to effectively integrate students with disabilities into the general education setting. Communicate regularly and effectively with parents/guardians, related service providers (e.g., speech therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists), and other school staff regarding student progress. Participate in CSE (Committee on Special Education) meetings and contribute meaningfully to the development of IEPs. Work collaboratively with paraprofessionals and other support staff to implement IEPs and appropriately support students. Assessment and Data Analysis (ELA & Social Studies Focus): Implement a range of assessment methods, including formative and summative assessments, to monitor students' understanding and progress in critical reading and historical content. Growth percentile ranks, Lexile reading measures, Item Skills Analysis (ISA) reports, and classroom performance to inform targeted instructional interventions and IEP modifications. Provide accommodations and modifications during NYS Regents examinations and classroom assessments as outlined in students' IEPs.

Professional Responsibilities:

Adhere to all NYC Public Schools policies, regulations, and ethical guidelines related to special education. Maintain accurate and confidential student records in accordance with legal and ethical requirements. Participate in ongoing professional development activities related to special education, literacy instruction, and effective inclusive practices. Stay current with research-based practices in special education and humanities instruction. Contribute to a positive and collaborative school culture.

Qualifications:

Required:

New York State Education Department (NYSED) Certification in Special Education (e.g., Students with Disabilities 7-12, General Special Education) AND content area knowledge in ELA and/or Social Studies. Bachelor's degree in Special Education, English/History Education, or a related field. Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of special education and inclusive education. Strong understanding of the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards and NYCDOE curriculum frameworks. Experience developing and implementing IEPs. Experience working with high school students with a range of disabilities. Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in using technology to support instruction and assessment.

Preferred:

Master's degree in Special Education, ELA/Social Studies Education, or a related field. Proven experience co-teaching in high school classrooms, specifically utilizing Parallel and Station Teaching models. Experience adapting and modifying complex literature, primary source documents, and writing curricula for students with disabilities.
