Veteran Preference Summary:
This person supports and backs up the Librarian II and performs the duties assigned by the Library Manager. Assumes responsibility for the operation of the branch when the Librarian II is not present and performs many of the same functions that the Librarian II would perform if he/she were present, including supervision of volunteers. Incumbent will be in direct contact with all members of the community, varying in ages and abilities, providing library and related services to all in a professional manner and on an age appropriate level of understanding
Responsibilities:
Provides guidance to patrons in finding and using printed and electronic resources. Uses library automation equipment and software and/or supervises the use of library automation equipment and software by volunteer staff and patrons. Promptly reports library automation system problems to the Librarian II or System Director, if Librarian II cannot be reached. Performs and/or supervises circulation of library materials. Presents or assists in any and all scheduled programs. Registers and/or supervises registration of patrons. Collects fines and fees and ensures security thereof. Tracks on a daily basis, the number of patrons visiting and any issues/concerns by patrons. Enforces library system policies and procedures. Assists the Librarian II in the selection of new materials. Organizes and maintains the library resources in the branch to include the addition of new material as well as the weeding and discarding of outdate or worn and damaged items. Provides displays of various kinds appropriate to the season or event. Accepts requests for interlibrary loans. Sees that the building is open and closed according to the published schedule. Deals professionally with patrons in normal and unusual circumstances. Assists in other ways that the Librarian II directs. Attends all scheduled employee meetings. Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to function independently without direct supervision. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to speak and understand clear English in order to communicate to patrons and others (children and adults) in person, by telephone and through written communications. Ability to deal with the public and co-workers in a courteous, professional, and tactful manner and to likewise supervise library volunteers. Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines and develop and recommend options, changes and solutions. Ability and willingness to accept, learn and apply new job skills, methods, procedures, operations, and policies, and on occasions, travel to training locations. Knowledge of common library principles, methods, materials and practices is desirable. Basic computer skills including familiarization with Windows, word processing and other common software. Ability to accurately complete simple mathematical computations dealing with whole numbers, percentages, decimals and fractions. Knowledge of and familiarity with alphabetical, numerical and library filing systems. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, coworkers, elected and appointed officials and members .
Qualifications:
A two-year college degree or two years library experience is desired. Other related work experience may be accepted. Supervisory experience is desirable. Knowledge of the community in which the library outlet is located. Valid Florida Driver's License for required travel. Employer conducts background check, drug screening, and motor vehicle record check.
Physical Requirements:
Most of the work of this position will be performed indoors, however some outside exposure will be experienced to service the book return, visit the Post office or other government offices or private businesses. A flexible schedule is required to accommodate some evening and weekend library hours. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will regularly be required to sit, stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk or hear, and lift up to 40 lbs. Acceptable vision (with or without correction); close distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Acceptable hearing (with or without correction)
