Public Service Assistant

Job Description

Public Service Assistant, Gale Free Library (Holden) Under the direction of the Assistant Library Director, the Public Service Assistant provides reference and circulation services to library patrons. This position performs a variety of specialized library tasks, as well as routine assignments which support the effective operation of the Library.
DUTIES:
  • Provides reader's advisory and reference and information services on-site, online and by telephone, following standard principles and practices and the policies of the library.
  • Assists the public in using all available information resources, including print, online databases, the Internet and referrals.
  • Uses standard and recommended reference interview techniques to ensure patron satisfaction.
  • Assists the public with the use of the library's equipment, including computers, printers, photocopiers and other devices.
  • Creates, attends and promotes adult programs. Creates publicity by producing flyers, displays for programs and library events
  • Provides coverage for Circulation Desk
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with public and staff, as well as independently.
  • Knowledge of basic reference resources desirable.
  • Knowledge of Evergreen or other ILS desirable.
  • Experienced with computer technologies, including database searching, and Internet.
  • Required to work evenings and weekends on a rotating schedule.
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic computer issues, comfort with mobile technologies (e-readers, handheld devices etc.)
Education:
Bachelor's degree.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Works in normal office and library environment.
  • Includes standing, sitting, walking, reaching, and stooping.
  • Operates a variety of office equipment requiring eye-hand coordination including computer terminals.
  • Ability to move loaded book trucks, reach all shelves, rearrange metal shelving, carry books and other items; ability to stand, walk, crouch, reach, stoop, sit; ability to talk, hear, use close and distant vision, depth perception, adjust to focus; ability to read, write.
