Job Description

Description Under general supervision, provides customer service at the circulation desk, including greeting patrons, checking out materials, issuing library cards, and collecting payments for fines and services. Assists patrons in locating and using library resources and supports library programs and services. Maintains the library collection by shelving materials, performing shelf reading, and processing returns to ensure materials are properly organized and accessible. Essential Functions Greet patrons at the circulation desk and provide courteous, professional assistance with library services. Check out library materials, manage study room reservations, and issue new library cards. Collect payments for printing, copying, fines, and other applicable fees while following established cash handling procedures. Assist patrons with the use of computers, printers, fax machines, and other library technology resources. Shelve returned materials, process book drops, and conduct shelf reading to maintain accurate and organized collections. Support library programs by preparing materials, creating book displays, facilitating storytime sessions, and assembling take-home kits. Perform routine maintenance tasks, including minor book repairs, equipment cleaning, and monitoring circulating hotspots. Provide Spanish translation support for policies, newsletters, and other library communications as needed. Perform related work as required. Qualifications, Education, and Experience Minimum Qualifications Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days of hire, a valid Texas Driver License and be eligible for coverage under the City's vehicle insurance provider. High school diploma or GED. Preferred Qualifications Associate's degree. Public library experience. Bilingual in Spanish. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of library processes and practices, including shelving, copy cataloging, and general collection management procedures. Knowledge of cash handling procedures and financial transaction practices. Knowledge of books, electronic databases, reference materials, internet resources, and basic research tools. Skill in public speaking and presenting information clearly and effectively. Skill in providing excellent customer service and assisting patrons in a professional and courteous manner. Skill in multitasking, prioritizing assignments, and managing workload effectively. Skill in operating computers, library technology, and related equipment. Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patrons, coworkers, and the public. Ability to interpret and apply library policies, procedures, and guidelines accurately. Ability to maintain organization, attention to detail, and accuracy in a fast-paced environment. Selected candidates will be subject to a background investigation and a pre-employment drug screen and, depending on the position, may require a physical assessment upon the conditional job offer. Due to this position's part-time status, no benefits are available.
