The Reading Village

Structured Mathematical Literacy Education

Job Description

The Reading Village is seeking a passionate, knowledgeable Structured Mathematical Literacy Interventionist to join our growing team. We work with children who have dyscalculia and other math-related learning differences. Our approach is rooted in Structured Mathematical Literacy — explicit, systematic instruction in number sense, computation, and mathematical reasoning. This is not a tutoring or homework-help role — we need an educator who understands how children learn math and can deliver individualized intervention for students who need more than classroom instruction alone. You'll collaborate with educators, therapists, and families to build personalized learning experiences that help students with dyscalculia and other learning differences grow their math skills and confidence. This role is also a strong fit for retired teachers or retired special education teachers seeking meaningful, flexible part-time work. What You'll Do Provide 1:1 Structured Mathematical Literacy intervention to elementary and middle school students Deliver explicit, systematic instruction in number sense, place value, computation, fact fluency, mathematical vocabulary, problem-solving, and reasoning Use diagnostic information and ongoing observation to identify student needs and adjust instruction Develop individualized lessons based on each student's skill level Build student confidence while maintaining high academic expectations Track student progress and communicate with families and the team Collaborate with other Reading Village educators and participate in ongoing professional development Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in education, special education, mathematics, or a related field Experience providing math intervention to children with dyscalculia or math-related learning disabilities Strong content knowledge of and passion for teaching mathematics, from foundational number sense through problem-solving Formal training in Structured Mathematical Literacy or a comparable evidence-based approach preferred Excellent command of spoken and written English, with clear, articulate communication and accurate grammar — required for modeling language and correcting student errors Strong organizational skills and reliable transportation for in-person sessions The Ideal Candidate Warm, patient, and energetic, with a knack for building strong relationships with students Skilled at analyzing student errors and using that information to guide instruction Comfortable communicating with parents and collaborating with a professional team Motivated to keep learning and growing as a math educator Why Join The Reading Village? We believe every child deserves to feel successful — in reading and in math. Our work goes beyond teaching computation — we help students understand how their brains learn, build effective strategies, and rebuild their confidence. Our educators are part of a collaborative team that values professional growth, creativity, and the whole child.
