Southwest Virginia Community College ( SWCC ) is seeking a creative instructor to teach English, beginning in January 2027. Primary teaching responsibility will be beginning composition classes but the ability to teach survey level literature courses is desirable. Teaching load per semester is 15 credit hours and could include day, evening, and/or some weekend duty. A minimum of 10 office hours are also required each week. This position will be assigned primarily to the main campus location; however, the successful candidate may be asked to travel to any of the sites in the SWCC service region. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with other professors in the English Department to ensure consistency of student outcomes. Additional duties include academic assessment, student advising, curriculum development, and service on college committees. The successful candidate will provide college level instruction in English and will be expected to design, annually assess, and update curriculum. The position reports directly to the Dean of Arts and Sciences and indirectly to the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs. The primary responsibility of a member of the teaching faculty in the Virginia Community College System shall be to provide quality instruction for the students. At SWCC , the major emphasis shall be on excellent teaching by working with students in classrooms and/or laboratories, through individual conferences, various distance education media, and related activities. Our goal is to help students develop his or her own interests and abilities to the fullest capacity in order to become a better person, a better worker, and a better citizen. Other duties shared by teaching faculty include participation in reaccreditation efforts, student advising, student activities, sponsorship of student organizations, supervision of work/study students, college service activities, professional development activities, and community service. Special Assignments May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor. KSA's/Required Qualifications Master's degree in English Knowledge of current teaching and learning strategies to facilitate student-centered learning Experience interacting successfully with academically diverse student populations Ability to teach classes using various instructional delivery methods including web-based instruction Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand Ability to work with service area education providers and employers Flexibility to teach evening and/or off-campus courses Ongoing professional development and membership on an appropriate regional, state, and/or national organization related to teaching assignment Responsibility for establishing a campus presence by holding regular office hours, advising students, participating in campus life, and doing assigned committee work Additional Considerations Experience Canvas or other online course management system.
