Maximum group size of 15 children, ages 5-13 Job Summary Golden Kids Academy Inc. is seeking a dependable, energetic, and organized Part-Time After-School STEAM Instructor Lead to help lead our school-year program for children ages 5-13. This is not a position where you simply teach one class and leave. The Instructor Lead is responsible for helping manage the children's complete after-school experience—from preparing the program space and assisting with school pickup to homework support, STEAM activities, meals/snacks, recreation, parent pickup, and end-of-day classroom organization. We are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys working with children, can confidently manage a group, takes initiative without needing constant direction, and understands that safety and supervision come first at all times . The ideal candidate is creative and fun with children while also being structured, responsible, punctual, and able to maintain clear expectations. What Your Typical Day May Look Like 1:00-2:30 PM | Program Preparation Prepare classrooms and activity areas for students. Review the day's schedule, organize materials, prepare STEAM activities, homework areas, snacks/meals, and coordinate student pickup assignments. 2:30-4:00 PM | School Pickup & Arrival Assist with picking up enrolled children from designated Rahway schools and safely transporting/transitioning them into the Golden Kids program. Complete attendance and ensure every child is properly accounted for. 3:00-5:00 PM | Homework + After-School Activities Support students with homework, reading, assignments, and school projects while maintaining a productive environment. Facilitate age-appropriate activities for students who have completed their work. 4:00-6:30 PM | STEAM Programming & Recreation Lead structured hands-on activities in areas such as science, engineering, technology, art, experiments, building challenges, crafts, games, and creative projects. 6:00-8:00 PM | Evening Care & Closing Supervise remaining students, facilitate quieter activities, communicate relevant information to parents during pickup, organize the classroom, sanitize/put away materials, complete required documentation, and prepare the program for the following day. Exact responsibilities and times may change based on enrollment, school dismissal schedules, programming, and operational needs. Core Responsibilities Lead and supervise a group of up to 15 children ages 5-13 . Maintain active supervision and know where assigned children are at all times. Facilitate engaging STEAM activities rather than simply monitoring students. Assist students with homework, reading, projects, and academic organization. Prepare 3-4 age-appropriate activity/module options throughout the program day as assigned. Assist with designated school pickups in Rahway for enrolled students. Verify attendance and ensure children are properly checked in and released. Supervise snacks/meals and help maintain a clean and organized environment. Manage transitions between homework, STEAM activities, recreation, meals, and dismissal. Implement positive and consistent classroom/behavior-management strategies. Adapt activities for different ages, abilities, interests, and learning needs. Communicate professionally with parents/guardians and Golden Kids leadership. Document attendance, incidents, injuries, behavioral concerns, and other required information. Follow all Golden Kids safety, emergency, child-release, transportation, and supervision procedures. Participate in indoor and outdoor activities with students. Help prepare and clean classrooms, materials, activity areas, and shared spaces. Work collaboratively with other instructors and support staff. Take initiative when something needs to be prepared, cleaned, organized, or addressed. What We're Looking For Candidates should understand that reliability is essential . Our families depend on Golden Kids to safely receive and care for their children after school.
Applicants should have:
Previous experience working with children in childcare, after-school, camp, tutoring, recreation, teaching, or youth-development settings. A valid driver's license and safe driving history because school pickup may be part of the position. Ability and willingness to drive for authorized school pickups when assigned. Strong classroom and behavior-management skills. Ability to independently manage a group of children while maintaining safety and structure. Genuine interest in STEAM, art, science, engineering, technology, or hands-on learning. Ability to explain activities in ways that children of different ages can understand. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Professional, dependable, patient, energetic, and positive demeanor. Ability to arrive on time and consistently work scheduled shifts. Ability to complete required documentation accurately. Ability to respond calmly and appropriately during emergencies. CPR/First Aid/AED certification is strongly preferred. Candidates who are not currently certified must be willing to complete required training before or within the timeframe established for employment. Experience working with children with different learning, behavioral, or developmental needs is a plus. This Position Is a Great Fit If You... Enjoy being actively involved with children rather than sitting back and supervising from a distance. You should be comfortable moving between roles throughout the afternoon— school pickup, homework helper, instructor, activity leader, mentor, classroom manager, and safety-focused caregiver. We especially value team members who can walk into a classroom, recognize what needs to be done, and take initiative without waiting to be told every next step . Important Before Applying Please apply only if you can reliably work within our after-school operating schedule of Tuesday-Friday, approximately 1:00 PM-8:00 PM . Because consistency is important for our children and families, we are seeking candidates who can make a reliable school-year commitment , rather than applicants looking for occasional or short-term shifts. Employment is contingent upon completion of all applicable childcare background checks, clearances, documentation, and training requirements . About Golden Kids Academy Golden Kids Academy Inc. provides small-group childcare and STEAM enrichment for children ages 5-13 in Rahway, New Jersey. Our program combines academic support, hands-on learning, creativity, recreation, and extended childcare in an environment where children can feel known, supported, and challenged. Join our Golden Kids team and help us create an after-school environment where children are safe, supported, learning, creating, and excited to return each day.
