Job Description

Job Overview Join our vibrant team as an After School Group Leader, where you'll play a vital role in creating a safe, engaging, and nurturing environment for children after school hours. The Group Leader plays a key role in creating a positive, engaging, and safe environment for youth participants in the
COMPASS & SONYC
after-school program. Under the guidance of the Activity Specialist or Content Specialist, the Group Leader is responsible for leading and supervising a designated group of participants, supporting the delivery of program activities, and ensuring youth are actively engaged in daily programming. The Group Leader fosters a nurturing environment that promotes social-emotional growth, teamwork, and skill development while maintaining high standards of safety, respect, and inclusion. In this dynamic position, you will facilitate fun and educational activities, supervise children, and promote positive behavior while fostering their social and emotional development. Your enthusiasm and leadership will inspire young minds and contribute to their growth beyond the classroom. Rosedale in Queens, NY Responsibilities Lead and supervise a consistent group of participants during daily program activities, transitions, and trips. Implement and assist with activities planned by Activity Specialist or Content Specialist. Foster a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment that encourages youth participation and positive behavior. Support participants' social-emotional development through active listening, encouragement, and mentorship. Maintain accurate attendance and ensure participants' safety at all times. Communicate regularly with supervisors regarding participant progress, needs, or incidents. Lead and organize a variety of age-appropriate group activities, including games, arts and crafts, outdoor play, and educational projects that promote creativity and teamwork Support homework assistance and academic enrichment activities. Ensure the safety of all children by maintaining vigilant supervision during all activities and transitions Implement behavior management strategies to encourage positive interactions and resolve conflicts effectively Follow established first aid protocols, administer basic first aid or CPR when necessary, and operate AED equipment confidently to respond to emergencies Collaborate with team members to plan youth development programs that support social skills, leadership, and personal growth Communicate regularly with parents or guardians regarding children's progress, behavior, or any concerns Maintain a clean, organized activity space that complies with safety standards and promotes a welcoming environment Ensure participants are released only to authorized individuals following program procedures. Assist during snack service, transitions, recreation, special events, and field trips. Participate in required staff meetings, training, and professional development sessions. Model appropriate conduct, teamwork, and enthusiasm consistent with the program's mission and DYCD standards. Promptly report accidents, injuries, behavioral concerns, suspected abuse or neglect, safety hazards, and other incidents according to organizational policies. Perform additional program-related duties as assigned. Qualifications Must be at least 18 years old. Minimum (2) years of direct experience working with children under the age of 13. High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's degree preferred. Proven experience working with children in settings such as childcare, camps, youth programs, or tutoring environments Demonstrated ability to lead youth activities, manage groups effectively, and engage participants in a positive manner. Experience working in after-school or summer camp settings. Familiarity with social-emotional learning (SEL) and positive youth development practices. Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to maintain professionalism and patience in fast-paced, youth-centered environments. Knowledge of childhood development principles and behavior management techniques Valid certifications in first aid, CPR, AED operation, and familiarity with first aid protocols preferred (certifications must be current) Strong classroom management skills with the ability to lead groups effectively and foster positive behavior Experience facilitating youth group activities or outdoor work experience is highly desirable Excellent communication skills to engage children positively and collaborate with team members Ability to handle diverse situations with patience, professionalism, and enthusiasm Bilingual (Spanish, Haitian Creole, or other community languages) a plus. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all required screenings and clearances, which may include: Background check Fingerprinting State Central Register clearance, where applicable Reference verification Employees must successfully complete all required organizational, DYCD, and School Age Child Care (SACC) training upon hire and throughout employment.
