Job Description

Genealogy/Outreach Specialist Position Summary The Genealogy/Outreach Specialist is responsible for overseeing the Library System's genealogy and local history services while leading strategic outreach initiatives that strengthen community engagement across Jefferson County. This position manages the genealogy collection, provides specialized research assistance, develops programs and partnerships, and serves as the Library System's primary liaison to community organizations, schools, churches, and civic groups. The role combines archival expertise with proactive outreach to ensure equitable access to library resources and services. While this job description doesn't cover all duties of this position, you are expected to perform any other duties as assigned. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Genealogy and History Services Manage and develop the Library System's genealogy and history collections, including print, digital, and archival materials. Provide advanced genealogy and historical research assistance to patrons, including one-on-one consultations and reference services. Maintain, organize, and preserve historical records, photographs, manuscripts, and other special collections in accordance with best practices. Coordinate digitization initiatives and collaborate on digital access projects related to local history and genealogy. Develop and deliver genealogy workshops, classes, lectures, and special events for the public. Prepare research guides, finding aids, and instructional materials related to genealogy and local history. Assist and monitor the rare book room when patrons are present. Outreach & Programming Support Plan, coordinate, and implement outreach programs that promote library services, resources, and literacy initiatives throughout Jefferson County. Build and maintain partnerships with community organizations, schools, senior centers, historical societies, faith-based organizations, and local government agencies in conjunction with programmers and branch staff. Represent the Library System at community events, meetings, school functions, and public forums. Identify underserved populations and develop targeted outreach strategies to address community needs. Collaborate with branch staff to support system-wide outreach goals and programming. Oversee The More Than Just Books Podcast, ensuring there is a guest each Thursday. Evaluate programs system-wide to ensure needs are met throughout the county Create Program images for branches and proofread descriptions on LibCal Create promotional material for the system and provide access in print, digital, and social media channels. (Flipbook, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok) Maintain accurate records, reports, and statistics related to genealogy usage and outreach activities. Collect and analyze program data and community feedback to assess impact and guide future initiatives. Ensure compliance with library policies, procedures, and applicable laws and regulations. Customer Service Welcome visitors, answer reference questions, and help users locate books, microfilm, newspapers, maps, or digital media. Guide patrons through public computer use, printing, and navigation of digital databases. Maintain an approachable demeanor and acknowledge a waiting patron Promote literacy, digital access, and lifelong learning.
