Media and Digital Arts Instructor Reports to: Program Director /

Part-Time Primary Function The primary responsibility of the Afterschool Media and Digital Arts Instructor is to develop engaging, hands-on, and enriching programming for youth in grades K-8 that encourages creativity, self-expression, communication, digital literacy, and skill development through media and digital arts. Programming may include photography, filmmaking, videography, graphic design, animation, podcasting, digital storytelling, digital art, computer-based creative technology, and other project-based media experiences. The position currently includes a grant-supported program focus on health, prevention education, positive decision-making, and youth awareness initiatives . The instructor will be responsible for incorporating assigned prevention-focused topics into media and digital arts programming and for ensuring required programming, participation goals, activities, and documentation are completed as directed. Media and digital arts should serve as a creative vehicle through which members can explore important topics, develop their own perspectives, and create projects that educate, inform, or positively influence their peers and community. Once required grant-supported programming and participation expectations are being consistently met, the instructor may expand programming into additional media and digital arts projects based on their strengths, youth interests, available resources, and Club priorities. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Hudson County program combines recreation and hands-on learning to support youth development and complement academic instruction provided in the classroom. This position works closely with other BGCHC staff, parents, volunteers, interns, and community partners.
Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To:
Media & Digital Arts Programming Develop and facilitate engaging, age-appropriate media and digital arts activities for program participants. Provide youth with opportunities to explore creative digital media through areas such as: Photography. Filmmaking and videography. Graphic design. Animation. Podcasting and audio production. Digital storytelling. Digital art. Computer-based creative technology. Other project-based media experiences that encourage creativity, communication, self-expression, and skill development. Develop projects that allow members to move from learning basic concepts and tools to producing completed creative work. Guide youth through the creative process, including brainstorming, planning, scripting, storyboarding, production, editing, revision, presentation, and reflection when appropriate. Help participants develop confidence in expressing their ideas and perspectives through digital media. Teach youth how photography, video, graphics, audio, and other media can be used to tell stories, share information, express ideas, and create positive messages. Provide instruction and support in the safe and appropriate use of cameras, computers, tablets, software, audio equipment, and other available media tools. Ensure all activities are engaging, developmentally appropriate, and accessible to members with different experience and skill levels. Create opportunities for youth projects to be shared through Club showcases, exhibitions, presentations, awareness activities, or other approved events. Develop a consistent media and digital arts program that reflects the instructor's strengths while providing youth with opportunities to explore different forms of creative expression. The instructor is not expected to provide programming in every media area listed above. Programming should be developed around the instructor's skills and experience, available resources, member interests, and Club priorities. Grant-Supported Prevention & Youth Awareness Programming Implement assigned grant-supported programming and ensure required activities are completed within established timelines. Incorporate age-appropriate health, prevention, and positive decision-making concepts into creative media projects. Facilitate activities addressing topics that may include: Positive decision-making. Peer pressure and social influence. Healthy coping strategies. Stress and emotional wellness. Positive relationships and support systems. Risk recognition. Help-seeking and identifying trusted adults. Substance-use prevention. Prescription medication safety and misuse prevention. Opioid misuse prevention and awareness. Positive peer and community influence. Provide prevention information in a factual, supportive, and developmentally appropriate manner. Help youth examine how social media, entertainment, advertising, peers, and other influences can affect attitudes, choices, and behaviors. Use media projects as a way for youth to demonstrate what they have learned and communicate positive messages to others. Guide members in developing projects such as public service announcements, short videos, photography campaigns, digital posters, graphic designs, podcasts, animation, or other youth-created awareness materials. Encourage youth voice by allowing members to develop their own messages, ideas, and creative approaches while ensuring content remains appropriate and consistent with BGCHC expectations. Support required program participation and engagement goals by actively recruiting, engaging, and retaining youth in assigned programming. Lesson Planning & Program Development Prepare detailed weekly lesson plans for assigned programming. Develop lessons with clear objectives, activities, skill-building opportunities, and expected youth outcomes. Incorporate required grant-supported activities into lesson plans when applicable. Create a balance between structured instruction, hands-on practice, individual creativity, and collaborative projects. Submit weekly lesson plans to the Program Director or designated supervisory staff every Friday prior to the upcoming week, regardless of whether staff are physically in the building. Use the official Boys & Girls Club lesson-plan format and submit plans through the designated electronic platform. Submit requests for lessons requiring materials to be purchased at least one full week in advance to allow for inventory review, processing, and delivery. Modify activities as needed based on member engagement, age, skill level, program needs, and available resources. Program Documentation & Grant Support Maintain accurate records of programming, including: Daily attendance. Program participation. Lessons and activities delivered. Youth engagement. Completed projects. Participant feedback. Staff observations. Notable accomplishments or challenges. Monitor program participation and communicate concerns regarding attendance, recruitment, engagement, or program capacity to supervisory staff. Maintain organized examples of completed youth work, including approved photographs, videos, graphics, audio projects, digital products, and other program materials. Assist supervisory staff with collecting information needed for organizational and grant reporting. Provide descriptions of program activities, participant experiences, completed projects, and observable youth outcomes when requested. Participate in program assessment and evaluation activities as directed. Youth Engagement, Supervision & Safety Actively supervise program participants and ensure member safety at all times. Maintain positive and professional relationships with youth. Create a welcoming, inclusive, organized, and youth-friendly classroom or studio environment. Encourage creativity, collaboration, positive peer interaction, leadership, and participation. Use positive behavior-management and redirection strategies. Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and follow all BGCHC youth-safeguarding requirements. Ensure youth are actively engaged in intentional activities while under supervision. Follow all Club procedures regarding attendance, transitions, member supervision, and dismissal. Report incidents, accidents, safety concerns, or significant behavioral concerns to supervisory staff as required. Equipment, Materials & Classroom Management Maintain inventory of media, technology, equipment, and program supplies. Ensure cameras, computers, tablets, audio equipment, and other program materials are stored properly and maintained in good working condition. Communicate equipment, software, supply, and program needs to the Unit Director, Program Director, or designated staff. Ensure members use equipment and technology safely and responsibly. Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety in classrooms and studio spaces. Protect Club equipment from damage, loss, or inappropriate use. General Program Responsibilities Attend regular staff planning and/or evaluation meetings. Attend required staff trainings and maintain the mandatory annual 10 clock hours of child-care training. Oversee volunteers, interns, assistants, or other support staff assigned to the classroom as directed. Ensure compliance with BGCHC policies and all applicable NJ State childcare licensing rules and regulations. Maintain professional and effective communication with program leadership and fellow staff. Assist with school pickups, member transitions, Club-wide programs, special events, and other operational responsibilities as needed. Perform other duties as assigned. Preferred Experience and Qualifications Bachelor's degree preferred in Media Arts, Digital Media, Film, Photography, Communications, Graphic Design, Education, Youth Development, or a related field. At least one year of experience working with school-age youth preferred. Demonstrated skill or experience in one or more areas of photography, filmmaking, videography, graphic design, animation, podcasting/audio production, digital art, digital storytelling, or related creative media. Experience developing or facilitating youth-centered lessons, workshops, or project-based activities preferred. Interest or experience in youth development, health education, prevention education, social-emotional learning, media literacy, or community education is a plus. Ability to translate ideas and topics into engaging, developmentally appropriate creative projects for youth. Strong communication, organization, lesson-planning, and classroom-management skills. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with program leadership and fellow staff. Ability to maintain accurate program records and documentation. Familiarity with NJ State childcare licensing procedures preferred.
