Position Summary The Curator of Learning & Family Engagement serves as the strategic and intellectual leader of MoAD's learning ecosystem, advancing the museum's mission to place contemporary art and artists of the African Diaspora at the center of the global cultural conversation. Reporting to the Chief of Curatorial Affairs & Public Programs and serving as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Curator of Learning & Family Engagement is responsible for the vision, strategy, implementation, evaluation, and growth of all youth, family, school, teacher, and intergenerational learning initiatives. This position provides leadership for a department in an active period of growth, transition, and evolution. The Curator will oversee the rebuilding and expansion of the Learning & Family Engagement team, including hiring key staff, developing departmental systems and workflows, establishing long-range strategic plans, and creating pathways for sustainable program growth and audience development. The Curator serves as the museum's lead curriculum architect, developing the intellectual and pedagogical frameworks that shape MoAD's educational offerings. Working closely with the Chief of Curatorial Affairs & Public Programs and colleagues across the museum, the Curator translates exhibitions, scholarship, artist practices, and institutional priorities into meaningful learning experiences that serve students, teachers, families, and lifelong learners. As a senior institutional leader, the Curator contributes to museum-wide planning, fundraising strategy, audience development initiatives, and organizational culture while ensuring that all learning experiences are inquiry-based, artist-centered, culturally responsive, and aligned with MoAD's mission and strategic goals. Key Responsibilities Department Leadership & Team Development Lead the strategic growth and long-term development of the Learning & Family Engagement department. Recruit, hire, onboard, supervise, and mentor departmental staff, including a Program Manager, Lead Teaching Artist, and part-time educators. Develop staffing plans that support departmental growth, succession planning, and institutional sustainability. Establish departmental goals, priorities, workflows, and performance expectations. Conduct performance reviews, coaching conversations, and professional development planning. Build a culture of collaboration, accountability, innovation, and continuous learning. Supervise contract curriculum developers, consultants, teaching artists, fellows, interns, and volunteers as needed. Foster a positive departmental culture that supports staff wellbeing, growth, and excellence. Develop pathways for emerging museum educators, teaching artists, interns, and fellows through mentorship, training, and professional development Curriculum Leadership & Intellectual Framework Development Serve as the intellectual and pedagogical leader for all Learning & Family Engagement initiatives. Act as the museum's lead curriculum architect, establishing the educational vision and learning frameworks that guide departmental programming and reflect MoAD's commitment to the global histories, contemporary realities, and cultural contributions of the African Diaspora. Develop and maintain a cohesive curricular framework that connects exhibitions, public programs, school partnerships, family engagement, youth programs, interpretation initiatives, and digital learning experiences. Lead the conceptual design and long-range evolution of MoAD's signature learning programs, including MoAD in the Classroom (MIC), the Teen Program, educator initiatives, family engagement programs, teacher professional development programs, and future learning platforms. Translate curatorial concepts, exhibition themes, artist practices, and institutional priorities into accessible, inquiry-based educational experiences for diverse audiences. Establish learning outcomes, pedagogical approaches, and interpretive methodologies that guide all departmental offerings. Oversee the development of curriculum materials, educator resources, workbooks, teaching guides, digital learning tools, and other educational content. Ensure curricular offerings reflect contemporary scholarship, culturally responsive pedagogies, and the global histories and artistic practices of the African Diaspora. Build systems that allow curricular frameworks to evolve over multiple years while remaining responsive to changing exhibitions, audiences, and educational needs. Collaborate closely with Curatorial Affairs, Public & Academic Engagement, artists, scholars, educators, and community partners to ensure intellectual rigor and relevance across all learning initiatives. Strategic Planning & Program Vision Develop and implement a comprehensive learning strategy that supports MoAD's exhibitions, mission, strategic plan, and audience development goals. Lead long-range planning for all youth, family, school, teacher, and intergenerational learning initiatives. Identify opportunities for innovation, expansion, and new program models. Position learning as a central component of visitor engagement, community impact, and institutional growth. Collaborate with the Chief of Curatorial Affairs & Public Programs on strategic initiatives that connect exhibitions, public programs, and learning experiences. Contribute to institutional planning related to audience development, accessibility, and community engagement. Program Development & Oversight Provide strategic and operational leadership for MoAD's learning portfolio, including oversight of signature initiatives such as MoAD in the Classroom (MIC), the MoAD Teen Program, school partnerships, teacher professional development programs, family engagement offerings, curriculum development initiatives, and exhibition-based learning experiences. During a period of departmental rebuilding and growth, the Curator will play an active role in program implementation and operational management while establishing the staffing structure, systems, and leadership capacity necessary for long-term sustainability.

Cultivate local, national, and international partnerships that advance MoAD's educational mission. Represent MoAD within educational, museum, and community networks. Maintain awareness of current educational standards, best practices, and emerging pedagogical approaches. Position MoAD as a leader in culturally responsive arts education and learning related to the African Diaspora. Interpretation & Visitor Learning Provide strategic leadership for interpretive frameworks that connect exhibitions, tours, educational resources, public programs, and visitor engagement initiatives across the museum. Partner with Curatorial Affairs, Public & Academic Engagement, and Visitor Experience teams to strengthen interpretation throughout the museum. Support the development of gallery guides, educational materials, family guides, teacher resources, and digital content. Collaborate on strategies that connect formal learning, public programming, and visitor engagement. Help ensure that MoAD's interpretive offerings remain accessible, engaging, and aligned with the museum's mission and values. Contribute to institutional efforts to create meaningful learning opportunities for visitors of all ages. Evaluation, Research & Audience Development Develop and implement evaluation frameworks for all Learning & Family Engagement initiatives. Establish metrics that assess learning outcomes, audience engagement, program effectiveness, and institutional impact. Analyze qualitative and quantitative data to inform strategic decision-making and program improvements. Work collaboratively with other departments to strengthen audience development and retention efforts. Produce regular reports documenting outcomes, participation, audience growth, and impact. Utilize evaluation findings to guide future curricular and programmatic development. Financial Stewardship, Fundraising & Resource Development Develop and manage annual departmental budgets and multi-year financial plans. Oversee financial stewardship of departmental grants, sponsorships, contracts, and restricted funding sources. Work collaboratively with the Development Department to identify, cultivate, and secure foundation, corporate, government, and individual funding opportunities. Contribute to grant proposals, sponsorship materials, donor cultivation strategies, and funding reports. Develop sustainable revenue and funding strategies that support the long-term growth of Learning & Family Engagement initiatives. Monitor expenditures, revenue, grant deliverables, and budget performance across all departmental activities. Prepare financial forecasts, program budgets, and strategic growth projections for review by senior leadership and the Board of Trustees. Ensure responsible management of resources while maintaining high-quality educational programming and audience impact. Institutional Leadership Serve as an active member of MoAD's Senior Leadership Team. Participate in institutional planning, policy development, and organizational decision-making. Support Board of Trustees committees and strategic initiatives as assigned. Represent MoAD publicly through speaking engagements, conferences, professional associations, and partnerships. Advance a positive organizational culture rooted in collaboration, equity, learning, and accountability. Serve as an ambassador for MoAD's mission and educational vision locally, nationally, and internationally. Required Education, Experience & Skills Master's degree in Museum Education, Art Education, Arts Administration, Museum Studies, Education, Art History, African Diaspora Studies, or a related field; equivalent professional experience may be considered. Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience in museum education, learning, family engagement, curriculum development, or related fields. Minimum five - seven years of supervisory and team leadership experience. Demonstrated experience hiring, mentoring, and developing staff. Demonstrated experience designing curricular frameworks and educational strategies that support multiple programs, audiences, and learning environments. Demonstrated experience engaging contemporary art, artists, and scholarship as foundational elements of curriculum design and learning experiences. Experience managing complex budgets, grants, sponsorships, and restricted funding sources. Experience building strategic partnerships with schools, educators, community organizations, and cultural institutions. Strong understanding of contemporary art and the arts and cultures of the African Diaspora. Excellent written, verbal, and public presentation skills. Strong organizational, project management, and leadership abilities. Preferred Qualifications Experience leading departmental growth, restructuring, or organizational change.
