The physical education teacher provides a safe, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate physical education program that promotes physical fitness, motor skills, teamwork, sportspersonship, and lifelong healthy habits for students. Plans, delivers, and assesses learning experiences that develop all students' physical literacy and health literacy skills.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Works collaboratively with teachers, administrators, parents, school and agency counselors and related service providers in the overall educational plan for students enrolled in the education setting.
  • Teach fundamental motor skills, team and individual sports, fitness, movement concepts, and health-related fitness. Developsandimplementsa standards-alignedphysical educationprogramthatmeetsALSDE state/districtlearningobjectivesandisappropriateforgradelevelsserved.
  • Create lesson plans with clear objectives, differentiated instruction, and measurable outcomes.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies (direct teaching, stations, cooperative learning, technology) to engage students.
  • Instructs students in a program of study which meets stated objectives and prepares students to master grade level standards.
  • Manage inventory and maintenance of physical education equipment; submit requests for supplies and repairs. Createandenforceclassroomandequipmentsafetyprocedures;supervise students ingym,outdoors,lockerrooms,andduringtransitions.
  • Manage class behavior using positive classroom management strategies; enforce safety rules and proper use of physical education equipment.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, special education staff, and parents to support students with diverse needs and IEP/504 accommodations.
  • Maintain and inventory equipment, facilities (gymnasium/playground); report maintenance and safety issues promptly.
  • Translates lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize the available time for instruction and to actively engage students.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom by providing positive reinforcement of acceptable behaviors and modifying unacceptable behaviors.
  • Evaluates academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, and keeps appropriate records to include attendance reports, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary
  • Communicates regularly with parents or guardians through conferences and other means to discuss student progress
  • Administers standardized testing ALSDE Fitness Test as required for all students
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and school events; represent the program at parent-teacher conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited college or university A valid Alabama Teacher's Certificate Must meet Every Student Succeed Act (ESSA) federal and state requirements or a willingness to meet the requirements within the designated timeframe
