The Reading Interventionist will work primarily with individual scholars and small groups to identify specific reading skill gaps and provide intensive, evidence-based interventions designed to accelerate scholar growth and move scholars toward grade-level proficiency. This position will work closely with ELA teachers, Directors of Instruction, instructional coaches, administration, and families to monitor scholar progress and ensure that intervention instruction complements and supports scholars' core ELA instruction. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of adolescent literacy development and believes that all scholars, including struggling and reluctant readers, can make meaningful academic progress when provided with explicit, targeted, and engaging instruction. Demonstrates knowledge of the New York State Next Generation English Language Arts Learning Standards for middle school. Understands the unique literacy needs of adolescent learners, particularly scholars reading below grade level. Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-based reading interventions and instructional strategies. Understands the components of effective reading instruction, including phonemic awareness and phonics when appropriate, decoding, fluency, vocabulary development, comprehension, and written response to text. Understands how to use diagnostic and progress-monitoring data to identify specific skill deficits and plan targeted interventions. Is fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English. Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills and outstanding interpersonal skills. Works effectively with scholars, teachers, instructional leaders, administrators, and families. Is willing to be an active and enthusiastic member of the REACH community. Demonstrates a commitment to equity, inclusion, and ensuring that all scholars have access to high-quality instruction. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Provide high-quality, targeted reading intervention instruction to individual scholars and small groups of 7th and 8th grade scholars. Use scholar assessment data to identify specific reading skill gaps and develop targeted intervention plans designed to accelerate scholar growth. Provide explicit and systematic instruction in areas such as decoding, word recognition, fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and written response to text, based on individual scholar needs. Provide intensive support to scholars who have significant gaps in foundational reading skills, including older scholars who may require explicit instruction in phonics and decoding. Use identified evidence-based interventions and instructional strategies that are responsive to individual scholar needs. Support scholars in developing strategies for understanding increasingly complex grade-level texts across content areas. Help scholars strengthen their ability to identify main ideas and supporting details, make inferences, determine meaning from context, analyze text, cite textual evidence, and demonstrate comprehension. Use engaging and age-appropriate texts and instructional materials that support the needs of adolescent readers. Administer diagnostic, benchmark, and progress-monitoring assessments as appropriate. Maintain accurate, data-based documentation of scholar interventions, performance, and progress. Regularly analyze scholar data to determine the effectiveness of interventions and adjust instruction when necessary. Assist teachers and administrators in identifying scholars who may benefit from placement in reading intervention groups. Establish and regularly review flexible intervention groups based on scholar needs and progress. Collaborate with ELA teachers to ensure intervention instruction supports and complements scholars' core classroom instruction without simply duplicating it. Collaborate with teachers, Directors of Instruction, instructional coaches, administration, and families to identify effective strategies for individual scholars and small groups. Communicate regularly with teachers and administration regarding scholar progress, areas of concern, and recommended instructional supports. Communicate with families regarding scholar progress when appropriate. Provide collaborative support to REACH's Response to Intervention (RtI)/Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) efforts. Participate in scholar support meetings, data meetings, and other collaborative meetings as needed. Work closely with Directors of Instruction, instructional coaches, ELA teachers, Special Education staff, and school administration to ensure a coordinated approach to scholar literacy development. Maintain high expectations for scholar achievement while building scholars' confidence, motivation, and independence as readers. Create a supportive intervention environment where scholars feel comfortable taking academic risks and recognize their own growth as readers. Perform other duties as assigned by school administration. Qualifications/Education and/or Experience All teachers must hold a New York State teaching certificate or be eligible for certification/reciprocity, except in cases where the Head of School makes an exception in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Minimum Bachelor's degree in Education, English, Literacy, Reading, Special Education, or a related field; Master's degree preferred. Certification or advanced training in Literacy/Reading is required Experience teaching middle school ELA and/or providing reading intervention preferred. Experience working with scholars who are reading significantly below grade level. Knowledge of evidence-based literacy instruction and intervention practices. Experience administering and interpreting reading assessments and using data to drive instruction. Proven track record of scholar achievement and a commitment to accountability. Salary Compensation is in accordance with REACH Academy Charter School's established salary step scale and verification of prior years of teaching experience.
