Job Summary This position develops and supports the implementation of an evidence-based literacy program and provides related educational support for teachers and students that are aligned to evidence-based reading research. This position usually performs duties within a team or departmental setting but might work independently in a unique teaching specialty. This position performs work under the general supervision of a principal and/or other designated administrator. Essential Responsibilities

  • Serves as the school literacy leader in collaboration with school leadership.
  • Oversees all language arts assessments and documentation procedures as prescribed by the Virginia Department of Education and PWCS
  • Demonstrates expertise in formal and informal screening, diagnostic and progress monitoring for components of literacy.
  • Demonstrates expertise in the ability to use diagnostic data to inform instruction for acceleration, intervention, remediation, and differentiation.
  • Supports the implementation and progress monitoring of appropriate reading intervention services using evidence-based strategies and fosters partnerships by providing continuous communication to parents and educational staff.
  • Collaborates with English Learning, Special Education, and Gifted staff to increase the capacity of teachers and specialists by facilitating the use of successful, evidence-based instructional strategies for diverse learners.
  • Collaborates with teachers and teacher teams in providing guidance, coaching, and supporting curriculum implementation using evidence-based instructional strategies. Serves as a coach for teachers and leaders by providing assistance, resources, demonstrations, and/or model lessons with observations to provide growth-producing feedback and facilitation of teacher reflection.
  • Assesses professional development needs, and designs and/or facilitates professional development sessions around best practices in literacy instruction.
  • Attends regular meetings, at least monthly, with the English Language Arts office and disseminates information and instructional strategies to school staff in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates the ability to monitor students, confer with colleagues or site instructors in a self-contained, team, departmental, itinerant capacity, either in the field, at multiple schools, or off-school site
  • Collaborates with school leadership and other professionals (school counselors, librarians, etc.) to carry out schoolwide instructional or related activities as needed.
  • Collaborates with school leadership and the ELA office to ensure implementation of the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA).
  • Participates in various professional development as required by the division or state.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of school-based and individual literacy plans.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning practices and experience in designing and delivering effective professional development to adults.
  • Evidenced instructional leadership skills to include a clear vision for a Division professional development program and successful experience teaching and coaching adults.
  • Strong organizational skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to formulate ideas and communicate them effectively.
  • Thorough knowledge of educational philosophy, educational research, methods and techniques of instruction, professional development standards, current educational issues, and Division priorities.
  • Ability to resolve conflict, listen to and appropriately respond to concerns in a timely manner.
