I. Position Summary Under the direction of the School Principal, the Science Teacher plans and delivers high-quality instructional programs aligned with the Maryland Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The successful candidate will foster an environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of every student, ensuring academic success through creative problem-solving, abstract reasoning, and independent thinking. II.
Essential Qualifications Educational & Certification Requirements:
Degree:
Bachelor's degree or higher in Secondary Education, Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science), or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Certification:
Holds or is eligible for a Maryland Professional Educator Certificate in the appropriate Science subject area and grade level.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Deep understanding of the Maryland Science Standards (NGSS) and the teaching/learning process. Proven ability to integrate technology into the curriculum to enhance student engagement. Strong competency in providing instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education. Exceptional communication and human relations skills to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, students, and the Somerset County community. III.
Key Responsibilities and Duties Instructional Excellence:
Develop and implement rigorous lesson plans that include all essential components defined by SCPS and the Maryland Learner Outcomes. Utilize a variety of research-based teaching strategies and the Dimensions of Learning framework. Diagnose student learning needs regularly to prescribe appropriate instructional objectives and interventions. Incorporate technology as an integral tool for instruction, data collection, and student assessment.
Classroom Environment & Management:
Establish clear, reasonable rules for classroom behavior and maintain a safe, orderly, and respectful learning environment. Maintain all necessary safety precautions for laboratory environments, ensuring student safety during experiments and practical applications. Modify instructional materials to meet the diverse needs of all students, including those with IEPs, 504 plans, and English Language Learners (ELL).
Professionalism & Collaboration:
Collaborate with faculty and departments to ensure a cohesive 6-12 or K-12 science vertical alignment. Communicate student progress objectively and consistently to parents, guardians, and school leadership. Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential records as required by Maryland law and SCPS policy. Participate in professional development, staff meetings, and school improvement committees to maintain professional competence.
