Job Overview Bread & Roses is seeking a dependable, hands-on Temporary Part-Time Programs Assistant to support the day-to-day operations of our programs. This is a varied position that will support food rescue and deliveries, the Emergency Pantry, Community Meals, and other program needs as they arise. The ideal candidate is comfortable jumping between tasks, working directly with guests and volunteers, driving the organization's van, moving food and supplies, and helping wherever support is needed. Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency is required. Must be available to work Mondays 10AM to 6PM and Wednesdays 9AM to 5PM. Key ResponsibilitiesFood Rescue & Driving Drive the Bread & Roses van to pick up food from grocery stores, businesses, food rescue partners, and other organizations. Load and unload food safely and efficiently. Weigh and document food received from pickups. Sort and organize rescued food according to program needs and available storage space. Move food throughout the building, including between upstairs and downstairs areas. Deliver surplus food to partner organizations when needed. Assist with delivery of food boxes to local Lawrence families as needed. Follow food safety procedures, including appropriate handling and timely storage of perishable food. Emergency Pantry Assist with the daily operation of the Emergency Pantry. Help stock and organize food, toiletries, diapers, pet supplies, and other essential items. Assist guests in navigating the pantry and finding items. Help maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming pantry. Work with volunteers to ensure pantry tasks are completed. Communicate with guests in English and Spanish. Community Meals Assist with meal preparation and cooking. Help with meal setup, service, and cleanup. Assist with preparing meals for both dine-in and takeaway guests. Maintain a clean and organized kitchen and dining area. Follow food safety and sanitation procedures. General Program Support Assist with whatever program-related tasks are needed each day. Help set up and break down program spaces. Move and organize food, equipment, and supplies. Support volunteers during pantry, meal, food rescue, and other program activities. Assist with special food distributions, drives, deliveries, and other program activities. Complete required daily program documentation accurately. Communicate program needs, supply shortages, and operational concerns to the appropriate staff member. Qualifications Fluent in English and Spanish; bilingual proficiency is required. Valid driver's license and ability to safely drive the Bread & Roses van. Comfortable driving locally and making frequent food pickups and deliveries. Comfortable working in a busy, physically active environment. Able to lift and carry food, supplies, equipment, and boxes weighing up to 50lbs. Able to regularly use stairs. Comfortable working in a kitchen and assisting with meal preparation. Dependable, flexible, and willing to take on different tasks throughout the day. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Able to interact respectfully with guests, volunteers, staff, and community partners. Previous experience in food service, food rescue, food distribution, a pantry, or a community-based organization is helpful but not required. Schedule & Physical Requirements This is a temporary, part-time position of approximately 25 hours per week , with the schedule based on program needs. The position involves frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, carrying, loading and unloading food, and navigating stairs. The employee must be able to safely perform the physical tasks associated with food rescue, pantry operations, meal service, and general program support.
Pay:
$18.00 - $22.00 per hour Expected hours: 25.0 - 28.0 per week
