Job Description

Position Summary:
The Tutor supports the academic goals of the Boys & Girls Club of Rockford by providing individualized or small group instruction in core subject areas (K-12). Under the supervision of the Director of Academic Success, Tutors help Club members build academic skills, complete homework, prepare for tests, and strengthen study habits. Tutors contribute to a safe, positive, and motivating learning environment that aligns with the Club's educational enrichment initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide tutoring support in one-on-one or small group settings for Club members during after-school or designated academic sessions.
  • Implement components of the Boys & Girls Club's academic success curriculum as directed by the Director of Academic Success.
  • Reinforce lessons and study skills through structured practice and hands-on activities.
  • Support members in completing homework assignments, projects, and academic goal setting.
  • Document and report attendance, student progress, and learning challenges to the Director.
  • Participate in pre-service training, team meetings, and ongoing professional development.
  • Collaborate with staff and volunteers to create a respectful, engaging, and achievement-oriented Club atmosphere.
  • Help manage and maintain tutoring spaces, supplies, and academic materials.
  • Promote high expectations for learning and positive behavior among youth.
  • Encourage member participation in enrichment programs such as STEM, literacy initiatives, and summer learning.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (preferably in education, youth development, or a related field).
  • Prior experience tutoring or working with children or teens in a structured setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage youth with empathy, patience, and cultural awareness.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and under the direction of program leadership.
  • Basic computer proficiency and ability to utilize online learning tools and applications.
  • Must pass background check and meet Boys & Girls Club safety requirements.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
Working Conditions:
  • Active, youth-centered environment; must be able to manage multiple students and needs simultaneously.
  • May require sitting, standing, and walking throughout the Club.
  • Will include occasional evenings and/or weekends based on programming needs.
