$25-$30/hour, negotiable based on experience; we will provide and pay for art materials About the Role We are seeking a creative, patient, and engaging Visual Art Tutor to work with our 7-year-old child at our home in Scarsdale. Must own vehicle and can drive to our home. We are looking for someone who can help our child develop genuine art skills while keeping lessons fun and inspiring . The ideal tutor will be able to introduce age-appropriate techniques and concepts while also allowing plenty of room for creativity, experimentation, and self-expression. This is a great opportunity for an art student, professional artist, art teacher, or experienced instructor who enjoys working with children and wants to help a young child develop a lasting interest in art. Responsibilities Plan and lead engaging, age-appropriate one-on-one art lessons tailored to the child's interests and skill level. Teach foundational visual art concepts such as color, composition, line, shape, form, texture, shading, and perspective . Technical capabilities with an emphasis on: Drawing and sketching Painting Help the child develop drawing and observation skills , including learning to draw objects, animals, people, and scenes. Balance structured instruction with open-ended projects that encourage creativity and self-expression . Gradually build skills and introduce more advanced techniques as the child's abilities develop. Encourage experimentation and help the child feel comfortable making mistakes and trying new ideas. Develop projects around the child's interests—for example, animals, nature, characters, architecture, or other subjects they enjoy. Create a positive, encouraging, and age-appropriate learning environment. Keep the child engaged and excited about learning and creating. Help organize and clean up art materials at the end of each session. Ensure the child's safety and well-being throughout each lesson. Ideal Candidate Has a background in visual arts, art education, illustration, design, or a related field . Previous experience teaching or tutoring children, particularly elementary-school-aged children, is strongly preferred. Has a strong understanding of fundamental art techniques and concepts. Is creative, energetic, patient, and encouraging . Can make art instruction engaging rather than feeling like traditional schoolwork. Is comfortable developing a lesson or project independently rather than relying on a fixed curriculum. Can adapt instruction to the child's interests, attention span, and developing abilities. Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Is reliable, responsible, and comfortable working in a private home. Has reliable transportation and is able to travel to our home in Scarsdale. Formal art education or teaching experience is preferred but not required for the right candidate. We are particularly interested in someone who is genuinely passionate about art and enjoys working with children.
