Job Description

Sylvan Learning is looking for a warm, dependable and engaging person who genuinely enjoys working with children and knows how to help students feel comfortable, encouraged and excited to participate. The most important part of this role is the ability to connect with students. We want someone who enjoys getting to know children, celebrating their progress and creating a positive environment where learning feels rewarding and fun. This is a great opportunity for someone studying or beginning a career in early childhood education, elementary education, psychology, child development, social work or a related field — or for someone transitioning into education. What You'll Do You'll work directly with children in after-school community learning programs.
Activities may include:
Early reading and phonics Addition, subtraction and multiplication Storytelling and language activities Arts and crafts Educational games and hands-on learning Helping students build confidence and positive learning habits What We're Looking For Friendly, warm and approachable Patient and encouraging Able to build positive relationships with students Comfortable with different ages, abilities and learning styles Creative and flexible when something isn't working Dependable and able to commit to the Monday-Thursday schedule Respectful of different cultures, communities and family backgrounds Comfortable working as part of a community partnership Able to take direction while also showing initiative Experience working with children is preferred but does not need to come from a traditional classroom. Tutoring, childcare, camps, coaching, mentoring, youth programs and volunteer experience are all relevant. A teaching certificate is not required. Opportunity to Grow You will work alongside experienced staff and learn how the program has been developed over time. As you gain experience, there may be opportunities to take on more responsibility for activity planning, program organization, communication with partner staff and adapting the program to better meet student needs. For the right person, this can become much more than a tutoring job — it is an opportunity to grow in education, youth development and community-based programming.
