As a middle school basketball referee, you serve as the final authority during interscholastic games. Your primary focus is to uphold the integrity of the game, promote good sportsmanship, and ensure that all games are conducted safely and in accordance with district guidelines. Referees work closely with the game scorekeeper, athletic director and the after school activities coordinator to support the overall mission of the school.
Key Responsibilities:
Game Management:
Officiate games on the court by enforcing rules, verifying line-ups, and managing substitutions and time-outs.
Safety and Compliance:
Conduct pre-game safety checks of the court, benches, and playing area. Ensure player equipment complies with rules (e.g., no jewelry, proper uniforms).
Communication:
Clearly signal calls and rule interpretations. Communicate professionally with coaches, players, and scorekeepers before, during, and after the game.
Conflict Resolution:
Address disputes promptly and professionally, maintaining composure and a positive demeanor, especially when interacting with developing middle school athletes.
Qualifications:
Education & Certification:
High school diploma or equivalent. Certification from a recognized body (e.g., NFHS, local state athletic association) is strongly preferred.
Knowledge:
Strong, up-to-date working knowledge of middle school basketball rules and regulations.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand for extended periods, move quickly on the court, and possess excellent hand-eye coordination and visual acuity.
Fingerprint Clearance Card:
Must hold a valid, up-to-date fingerprint clearance card for the state of Arizona.
Background Check:
Must clear standard youth-protection background checks required by the school district.
Expectations:
Professionalism:
Wear the required officials' uniform and arrive on-site at least 15-20 minutes prior to game time.
Reliability:
Commit to scheduled weekday afternoon games as assigned by the athletic director. Games are typically 2 days per week (Wednesdays and Thursdays) from 4:00 - 5:00 pm.
