Based on experience About Expo Outfitters Expo Outfitters is a San Diego-based trade show exhibit and event production company specializing in custom exhibits, branded environments, architectural elements, and event fabrication. We provide design, fabrication, graphics, and installation services for clients nationwide. Position Overview We are seeking an experienced CAD Drafter / Detailer to join our production team. This position is responsible for translating conceptual designs and renderings into accurate, fabrication-ready shop drawings and detailed installation instructions. The ideal candidate understands not only how things are designed, but how they are built, assembled, transported, installed, dismantled, and reused. This is a hands-on production detailing role requiring strong technical drafting skills, construction knowledge, and attention to detail. Key Responsibilities CAD Drafting & Fabrication Detailing Develop detailed CAD drawings from conceptual designs, renderings, and project specifications. Prepare complete fabrication drawing packages, including plans, elevations, sections, construction details, and assembly drawings. Detail custom cabinetry, counters, wall systems, display fixtures, structural elements, and other fabricated components. Specify dimensions, materials, hardware, fasteners, joinery, and construction methods. Prepare material lists, cut lists, and documentation required for fabrication. Review designs for constructability, material efficiency, and ease of assembly. Identify and resolve dimensional discrepancies, design conflicts, and potential fabrication issues before production. Installation & Assembly Documentation Develop clear installation instructions for exhibits and projects installed at convention centers, hotels, and other event venues. Prepare installation drawings showing component locations, assembly sequences, connection points, and hardware requirements. Create exploded views, numbered component diagrams, and step-by-step assembly instructions. Identify and label components to correspond with fabrication drawings, packing lists, and installation documentation. Account for transportation, handling, site access, and field assembly requirements. Detail components for efficient installation, dismantling, packing, and reuse. Ensure installation documentation is complete and understandable to field crews unfamiliar with the project. Production Coordination & Quality Control Coordinate with designers, project managers, estimators, and fabrication personnel. Verify critical dimensions, materials, and construction details before releasing drawings for production. Work with CNC operators, builders, and shop personnel to resolve fabrication questions. Incorporate revisions and field feedback into drawings and installation documentation. Maintain drawing accuracy and meet established production deadlines. Required Qualifications Minimum 3 years of professional CAD drafting or detailing experience. Proficiency in AutoCAD or comparable professional CAD software. Experience preparing detailed fabrication or shop drawings. Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, joinery, and assembly techniques. Ability to interpret architectural drawings, technical specifications, and conceptual renderings. Ability to develop clear assembly drawings and installation instructions. Strong attention to detail, dimensional accuracy, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines. Strong communication and organizational skills. Preferred Qualifications Experience in trade show exhibits, architectural millwork, custom cabinetry, retail fixtures, or commercial interiors. Knowledge of CNC fabrication and production processes. Experience with modular, knockdown, and reusable construction systems. Familiarity with wood, laminate, metal, acrylic, and other fabrication materials. Experience preparing installation manuals, exploded assembly drawings, and component identification systems. What We're Looking For We are looking for someone who understands the difference between drawing something and building it. Our projects are custom, deadlines are firm, and accuracy is critical. The right candidate takes ownership of their work, anticipates potential problems, and produces drawings that our fabrication team can confidently build from and our installation crews can easily follow. This is a production-focused detailing position, not a conceptual architectural design role. How to Apply Please submit your resume and examples of previous work, including CAD drawings, fabrication details, shop drawing packages, or installation and assembly instructions. Candidates with experience in architectural millwork, custom fabrication, cabinetry, retail fixtures, or trade show exhibits are encouraged to apply.
