Job Description

CAD Designer - Custom Scale Models KiwiMill Williamson, NY Job Details Full-time $25 - $30 an hour 4 days ago Benefits Paid time off Retirement plan Qualifications Rapid prototyping 3D modeling software 3D modeling for product design Geometry 3D printing Lighting design CNC Full Job Description About KiwiMill KiwiMill builds custom scale models for industrial, defense, aerospace, and data-center companies — mostly the centerpiece models that sit in the middle of a trade show booth. We've been in business for more than 60 years, we're a crew of about nine, and we have never missed a client's show date. Our models ship all over the country. The Role Customers send us their 3D CAD — often the full engineering assembly of a real product, thousands of parts deep. Your job is to turn that into a model we can actually build: scale it, simplify what won't read at scale, keep the detail that will, and break it into parts our shop can print, cut, machine, and assemble. This is design for fabrication, not mechanical engineering. You won't be running stress analysis or designing working machinery. You will be making a hundred practical decisions a day about how a part gets made, how it attaches, and whether it looks right. You'll work under our Engineering Manager and hand your files to the model makers who build from them. What You'll Do Take customer CAD (STEP, IGES, native SolidWorks or Inventor files — and sometimes only drawings or photos) and rebuild it as a buildable model at scale Decide what to simplify, what to keep, and what to exaggerate so the model reads correctly from across a booth Split the model into parts sized for our 20+ 3D printers, laser, and CNC — with wall thickness, joints, alignment features, and access for wiring and lighting designed in Choose the right material for each part: printed plastic for shape and detail, aluminum, steel, or brass where strength is needed Design internal structure, mounting, and provisions for lighting, screens, and moving parts when a job calls for them Produce fabrication files (print-ready
STL/3MF, DXF
for laser, CNC files), materials lists, and renders for customer approval Work with the model makers on the floor when something doesn't fit — and fix it in the design, not just on the bench Hit deadlines. Every job has a show date, and the show doesn't move. Must Have Strong 3D solid modeling in a parametric CAD package — SolidWorks, Inventor, Fusion, FreeCAD, or similar. Parts, assemblies, and working with imported geometry. This is non-negotiable, and we will test it. Comfort working with large imported assemblies: cleaning them up, defeaturing, and rebuilding where needed An understanding that how a part will be made changes how you model it Good spatial sense and an eye for what looks right Ability to work on-site in Williamson, NY Some of our customers' technical data is export-controlled under ITAR, and this role requires access to it. Applicants must be a U.S. person (U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual). Nice to Have Autodesk Inventor Experience (what we use in-house) 3D printing experience — part orientation, supports, slicer settings, post-processing An industrial design, mechanical design, or model-making background (about half our crew are RIT industrial design graduates) Hands-on shop experience Rendering experience Comfort using AI tools as part of your workflow A degree is welcome but not required. Your portfolio matters more than your diploma. Schedule, Pay, and Benefits Four-day week, Monday through Thursday — 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM $25-30 per hour, based on experience
SIMPLE IRA
retirement plan — KiwiMill contributes 2% of your pay Steady, year-round work — the shop is busy every month of the year Interesting subjects: armored vehicles, satellites, power and cooling equipment, data centers, and whatever comes in next How to Apply Apply through Indeed with your resume and a portfolio of your 3D modeling work (screenshots, renders, or links). Show us the most complex assembly you've built or cleaned up. Finalists will do a short, practical CAD exercise. KiwiMill is an equal opportunity employer.
