Job Overview The CNC Precision Machining Process Engineer is responsible for developing, optimizing, and supporting CNC machining processes to manufacture high-precision components that meet engineering specifications, quality standards, and production requirements. This role focuses on process development, CNC programming, tooling selection, machining strategy, cycle-time reduction, process validation, and continuous improvement to improve productivity, quality, and cost efficiency. Responsibilities Develop, implement, and optimize CNC machining processes for precision components. Establish machining strategies, operation sequences, cutting parameters, feeds, speeds, and depth of cut. Develop processes for CNC milling, turning, multi-axis machining, and other precision machining operations. Evaluate part prints, engineering drawings, GD&T requirements, and 3D CAD models to determine manufacturing feasibility. Select appropriate CNC machines, fixtures, workholding methods, cutting tools, and machining methods. Develop and maintain standardized machining processes, setup sheets, work instructions, and process documentation. Develop, modify, and optimize CNC programs using CAM software and machine-specific programming methods. Support programming for 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis CNC machining centers and CNC lathes, as applicable. Select cutting tools, tool holders, inserts, and coatings based on material characteristics and machining requirements. Optimize tool paths to reduce cycle time, improve surface finish, and extend tool life. Apply machining best practices to minimize tool wear, chatter, vibration, burr formation, and dimensional variation. Troubleshoot CNC program issues, machine alarms, machining defects, and process instability. Identify and implement opportunities to reduce machining cycle time, setup time, scrap, rework, and tooling costs. Improve machine utilization, production throughput, and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). Evaluate new machining technologies, cutting tools, fixtures, automation, and manufacturing methods. Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for machining operations. Lead or support continuous improvement projects that improve productivity, quality, and manufacturing efficiency. Provide technical support to CNC operators, and production supervisors. Troubleshoot machining problems related to dimensional accuracy, tool life, surface finish, machine capability, and material variation. Investigate recurring production issues and implement permanent corrective actions. Support machine setup, prove-out, tooling trials, and process change implementation. Develop standard operating procedures. Collaborate with Maintenance and Production teams to resolve equipment-related issues affecting process performance. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered. Three to five years of experience in CNC machining, manufacturing engineering, or precision machining process development. Experience with 5-axis machining, multi-axis turning, mill-turn equipment, or high-precision machining applications Strong understanding of CNC milling, turning, machining fundamentals, and metal-cutting processes. Knowledge of CNC controllers such as FANUC, Siemens, or Haas. Experience interpreting engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerances, and surface finish specifications. Knowledge of cutting tool selection, feeds and speeds, workholding, fixtures, and machining optimization. Experience with CNC programming and/or CAM software. Familiarity with precision inspection methods, SPC, root cause analysis, and corrective action processes. Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and project management skills. Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and structured problem-solving tools. Experience in aerospace, automotive, medical devices, defense, or other regulated manufacturing environments. Familiarity with ISO 9001, AS9100, or IATF 16949, where applicable.
