Job Description

Engineering Process Safety Documentation Intern

The Engineering Process Safety Documentation Intern will support the engineering, project delivery, and information management teams in maintaining and organizing critical process safety and engineering documentation for industrial process facilities. The intern will assist with the development, management, tracking, and continuous improvement of Process Safety Information (PSI), engineering records, design documentation, and project deliverables. This position provides exposure to engineering design, process safety management, document control, quality systems, and project execution in a fast-paced engineering and construction environment. The successful candidate will gain practical experience working with multidisciplinary engineering teams while learning industry standards, engineering workflows, and information management practices that support safe and reliable facility operations.

Essential Functions:
  • Assist with the organization, tracking, storage, and retrieval of engineering and process safety documentation.
  • Support the maintenance of Process Safety Information (PSI) files, including process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), equipment data sheets, operating procedures, and engineering calculations.
  • Help ensure engineering documents are properly reviewed, approved, issued, and archived in accordance with company procedures.
  • Maintain document registers, metadata, numbering systems, revision histories, and transmittal records.
  • Assist with document control activities for engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and startup projects.
  • Support the collection and verification of vendor documentation, equipment manuals, material certifications, and technical submittals.
  • Participate in audits of engineering files to identify missing, outdated, or inconsistent documentation.
  • Assist in developing and improving document management workflows, templates, and standards.
  • Support engineering teams by compiling technical information for Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), Management of Change (MOC) activities, and other process safety initiatives.
  • Coordinate information between internal engineering teams, contractors, consultants, and vendors.
  • Support implementation and maintenance of project information management systems, SharePoint sites, and document repositories.
  • Develop reports, tracking tools, and metrics related to engineering deliverables and process safety documentation status.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts focused on information accuracy, accessibility, and compliance.
Required Skills:
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interest in engineering systems, industrial processes, process safety, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining accuracy and consistency.
Preferred Skills:
  • Familiarity with engineering drawings and technical documents such as PFDs, P&IDs, equipment specifications, and vendor submittals.
  • Exposure to document management systems, SharePoint, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Procore, or similar platforms.
  • Basic understanding of Process Safety Management (PSM), Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), or Management of Change (MOC) concepts.
  • Knowledge of engineering numbering systems and revision control practices.
  • Experience with data organization, workflow management, or information systems.
  • Familiarity with industrial, chemical, renewable energy, oil & gas, manufacturing, or process plant environments.

Qualifications

Required Background:
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Safety Engineering, Information Management, Construction Management, or a related technical discipline.
