Specialty Engineering Consultants (SPEC) is seeking a motivated Geotechnical Engineering Intern for a full-time position. This opportunity is ideal for a current Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering student, or a recent graduate, seeking practical experience in geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing. The intern will work under the supervision of a Professional Engineer (PE) and gain exposure to field investigations, soil and concrete laboratory testing, engineering analysis, and preparation of technical reports. Responsibilities - Geotechnical Engineering

• Assist with scheduling and coordinating geotechnical investigations and field activities.
• Assist with collection, organization, identification, and documentation of soil samples.
• Analyze and evaluate soil and material samples using established testing procedures.
• Assist engineers with geotechnical data analysis and interpretation.
• Assist with soil recommendation and geotechnical engineering reports under the direct supervision of a PE.
• Organize and maintain field and laboratory testing records; review boring logs, laboratory results, and project documentation.
• Communicate with field personnel, contractors, clients, and project team members as needed.
• Gain exposure to foundation recommendations, site development, earthwork, soil classification, and compaction. Responsibilities - Concrete Materials Testing
• Receive, label, log, and organize concrete cylinder specimens and related sample documentation.
• Assist with proper handling, storage, and curing of concrete specimens.
• Prepare concrete cylinders for compressive strength testing and operate testing equipment under training and supervision.
• Measure and record specimen information, test results, and observations accurately.
• Follow applicable ASTM procedures and company quality-control and safety requirements.
• Clean, inspect, and maintain concrete testing equipment and laboratory work areas; report irregularities or equipment concerns. Responsibilities - Soil Laboratory & General Support
• Assist with soil sample preparation and routine tests such as moisture content, sieve analysis, and compaction/Proctor testing.
• Maintain accurate testing worksheets, laboratory logs, and sample tracking records.
• Help maintain laboratory equipment, cleanliness, organization, and safe working conditions.
• Perform other engineering, laboratory, and administrative duties as assigned. Qualifications
• Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering program; geotechnical focus preferred.
• Interest in geotechnical engineering and hands-on construction materials testing.
• Strong mathematical, analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
• Ability to read technical information, follow testing procedures, and maintain accurate records.
• Good written and verbal communication skills; proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel preferred.
• Ability to work independently while taking direction from a PE and laboratory personnel.
• Comfortable performing hands-on laboratory tasks and lifting materials up to 50 pounds.
• Previous construction, engineering, laboratory, or field experience is a plus, but not required.
