Job Description

MEG Engineers is seeking an experienced Geotechnical Department Manager to lead and continue the growth of our geotechnical engineering practice. This is a senior leadership position responsible for the technical, operational, financial, and client-facing performance of the geotechnical department. The successful candidate will oversee a diverse portfolio of geotechnical projects while leading engineers, field personnel, laboratory operations, and project delivery. Responsibilities l Provide technical leadership and oversight for geotechnical engineering projects. l Manage and mentor project managers, engineers, technicians, drilling personnel, laboratory personnel, and other department staff. l Oversee project workload, staffing, scheduling, and resource allocation across the department. l Review and approve geotechnical engineering reports, recommendations, proposals, and other technical deliverables. l Provide senior-level engineering judgment for complex foundation, pavement, earthwork, construction, and subsurface issues. l Serve as a senior technical resource for clients, contractors, architects, structural engineers, civil engineers, and internal staff. l Oversee development of project scopes, drilling and laboratory programs, engineering fees, schedules, and proposals. l Monitor project budgets, department backlog, utilization, revenue, and overall financial performance. l Maintain quality-control standards and consistency across the department's engineering work. l Support and develop relationships with existing clients while assisting with business development and new opportunities. l Participate in project pursuits, scope negotiations, fee development, and major client meetings. l Resolve technical, scheduling, staffing, and client issues that require department-level decisions. l Develop engineers and project managers so that responsibility and decision-making are effectively distributed throughout the organization. l Identify opportunities to improve department processes, efficiency, technology, and project delivery. l Coordinate with company leadership and other engineering disciplines. l Support recruiting, hiring, training, performance management, and long-term development of department personnel. l Maintain professional and regulatory standards applicable to the practice of geotechnical engineering in Texas. Qualifications l Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a related engineering discipline. l Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Texas, or ability to obtain Texas licensure through reciprocity. l Approximately 8-12+ years of geotechnical engineering experience, with demonstrated progression into project and personnel leadership. l Significant experience preparing and reviewing geotechnical engineering reports and recommendations. l Strong knowledge of shallow and deep foundations, expansive soils, settlement, pavement systems, earthwork, construction practices, and subsurface investigations. l Demonstrated experience managing multiple simultaneous projects and competing priorities. l Experience supervising and developing engineers and technical personnel. l Experience developing scopes, proposals, budgets, and project fees. l Strong client-management and communication skills. l Sound technical judgment and the ability to make decisions when conditions are uncertain or incomplete. l Understanding of the operational and financial aspects of running an engineering group or department. l Experience with Texas geology and geotechnical practice, particularly in South Texas, Central Texas, or the Gulf Coast region, is strongly preferred. What We Are Looking For This position requires someone who can operate beyond the individual-project level. We are looking for a leader who can understand the entire department - its people, projects, clients, technical risks, schedules, backlog, and financial performance - and make decisions that keep the organization moving forward. The successful candidate should be capable of becoming the primary day-to-day leader of the geotechnical department, while building a team and systems that do not depend on any single individual to function successfully. This is an opportunity for an experienced geotechnical engineer to assume substantial responsibility for an established practice and help shape its continued growth.
