Company Overview Roots Decks & Remodels is based in Penn Yan, serving homeowners throughout the Finger Lakes. We design and build whole-home renovations, kitchens, bathrooms, and decks. Our approach starts with understanding what the homeowner needs, making a clear plan, and following through on the details. We value people who take ownership of their work, communicate openly, and work together to solve problems. Job Summary Residential Designer & Selections Specialist Roots Decks & Remodels — Penn Yan, NY Full-time | $75,000-$85,000 per year + benefits Roots is hiring a creative, organized designer to help homeowners across the Finger Lakes turn their ideas into thoughtfully designed remodeling projects. You'll guide clients from an approved preliminary budget through design development, drawings, and material selections, helping prepare their projects for a signed construction contract. You'll be their primary guide through the design and selections process—helping them understand their options, make confident decisions, and keep their project moving. This role combines hands-on design work with client relationships, practical problem-solving, and close collaboration with our estimating and construction teams. What you'll do: Meet with clients to understand their style, priorities, functional needs, and budget. Develop a cohesive design direction that fits the home and the client's goals. Create and revise layouts and project drawings that clearly communicate the proposed design. Guide selections for cabinetry, countertops, flooring, tile, fixtures, lighting, paint, hardware, and other project materials. Coordinate samples, showroom visits, and vendor information. Help clients compare options and understand tradeoffs involving appearance, function, cost, and availability. Work with estimating to identify and communicate the budget impact of design and selection changes. Coordinate with the construction team to confirm that proposed designs and materials are practical to build. Establish decision deadlines and follow up on outstanding selections. Keep drawings, product specifications, selections, and client approvals accurate and organized. Prepare a complete design and selections package to support final pricing, contract preparation, and the handoff to construction. What we're looking for: Relevant residential design or remodeling experience. The ability to produce clear, accurate layouts and project drawings using design or drafting software. A portfolio demonstrating thoughtful design, material selections, and drawing ability. Strong listening and communication skills, with the confidence to guide clients through unfamiliar decisions. Practical knowledge of residential materials, finishes, and how they work together. Comfort discussing budgets and helping clients prioritize. Strong organization, attention to detail, and follow-through across multiple projects. A collaborative approach and willingness to incorporate feedback from estimating and construction. You'll do well here if you enjoy both the creative and organizational sides of design. You can pull a space together, explain your recommendations, and make sure the details are documented so the team can bring that vision to life.
