May Construction

Senior Interior Designer / Architectural Designer

Job Description

Senior Interior Designer / Architectural Designer May Construction + Native Plans Nashville, Tennessee | In-House / Full-Time About the Role May Construction and Native Plans are seeking an exceptionally talented, technically strong Senior Interior Designer / Architectural Designer to join our in-house design team. This is not an entry-level position and is not a traditional decorating or selections-focused interior design role. We are looking for a designer who can take ownership of the architectural and interior design of high-end residential projects from early concept through construction documentation and field execution. The ideal candidate combines excellent design judgment with deep technical competency and can work fluidly across architecture, interiors, exterior elevations, materiality, cabinetry, millwork, lighting, and construction detailing . This person should be equally comfortable designing a sophisticated interior, refining the massing and proportions of a front elevation, developing an exterior material palette, and documenting the project accurately in Revit. Expert-level Revit proficiency and a professional design degree are absolute requirements. What You'll Do You will work directly with our development, construction, preconstruction, and design teams to create and execute high-quality residential projects.

Responsibilities will include:

Lead the architectural and interior design development of custom homes, speculative residences, renovations, and residential development projects. Develop projects in Autodesk Revit from concept through detailed construction documentation . Create, modify, and maintain accurate Revit models, plans, elevations, sections, details, schedules, and drawing sets. Design and refine exterior elevations , including: Architectural massing Roof forms Window and door composition Cornice and trim conditions Porches and entries Chimneys Dormers Exterior detailing Overall proportion and architectural character Develop sophisticated exterior surfacing and material packages , including brick, stone, stucco, siding, panel systems, roofing, metals, trim, and architectural accents. Design interior spaces including kitchens, primary suites, bathrooms, stair halls, living spaces, built-ins, bars, offices, and specialty rooms. Develop cabinetry, millwork, ceiling, fireplace, wall treatment, and architectural detail packages. Select and coordinate interior finish materials, plumbing fixtures, lighting, hardware, flooring, tile, countertops, appliances, and related specifications. Produce interior elevations, reflected ceiling plans, cabinetry drawings, finish schedules, lighting plans, and detailed design documentation. Ensure interior and exterior design decisions are coordinated with structural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and construction requirements. Review architectural plans critically for proportion, functionality, constructability, and design consistency. Identify design conflicts and inconsistencies before they reach the field. Coordinate directly with project managers, estimators, subcontractors, vendors, architects, engineers, and ownership. Review shop drawings, submittals, samples, and fabrication drawings. Participate in site visits throughout construction and help resolve field design conditions. Maintain design intent while also understanding budget, value engineering, constructability, and schedule. Help establish and maintain company design standards, Revit standards, material libraries, details, and documentation systems. Participate in conceptual design presentations, renderings, precedent studies, and material boards as needed. Required Qualifications Candidates must meet the following requirements to be considered : Bachelor's or Master's degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, Architecture, or a closely related professional design discipline . Expert-level Autodesk Revit proficiency. Several years of professional design experience with a demonstrated body of completed work. Strong portfolio of sophisticated residential architecture and/or interiors. Proven ability to design and document projects independently rather than simply execute another designer's direction. Strong understanding of residential architectural composition, proportion, massing, and detailing. Demonstrated competency designing exterior elevations and exterior material compositions . Strong understanding of residential interior architecture, cabinetry, millwork, lighting, and finish detailing. Ability to produce professional construction drawings and detailed design documentation. Strong knowledge of residential construction methods and materials. Ability to understand how design decisions translate into actual field construction. Excellent visual judgment and attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple active projects and deadlines. Strongly Preferred Experience designing luxury or high-end residential projects . Architecture background combined with strong interior design ability. Experience working directly for a residential developer, custom homebuilder, architecture firm, or design-build company. Experience developing full residential projects primarily within Revit. Strong abilities in SketchUp, Enscape, Lumion, Twinmotion, Adobe Creative Suite, or comparable visualization software. Knowledge of residential building codes and permitting requirements. Experience designing custom cabinetry and architectural millwork. Experience with material sourcing and vendor coordination. Experience conducting construction administration and field observations. The Designer We Are Looking For We are specifically looking for a high-level designer , not someone early in their career who needs to be taught fundamental design principles. The right candidate should be able to look at an elevation and immediately recognize when the proportions, rooflines, fenestration, or material transitions are wrong — and know how to fix them. They should be able to walk through a framed house and identify opportunities or problems that are not obvious on paper. They should understand that great residential design comes from the integration of architecture, interiors, materials, lighting, detailing, construction, and proportion — not from selecting finishes in isolation.

We value designers who are:

Highly creative but technically disciplined Opinionated about good design while remaining collaborative Extremely detail-oriented Fast and highly proficient in Revit Comfortable making decisions Comfortable receiving direct design feedback Capable of taking broad creative direction and turning it into a fully resolved design Interested in seeing their designs actually built rather than ending their involvement at the drawing stage About May Construction + Native Plans May Construction is a Nashville-based residential construction and development company focused on creating thoughtful, highly designed residential projects. Native Plans is our affiliated architecture, drafting, and design platform, allowing design and construction to operate together rather than as separate silos. Our goal is to produce homes where the architecture, interiors, exterior materiality, construction details, and execution feel like one cohesive design. This role will have significant influence over that process and will work closely with company leadership from the earliest stages of a project through completion. Portfolio Requirement A portfolio is required.

Applicants should include examples demonstrating:

Exterior residential elevation design Interior architectural design Revit documentation Kitchens and cabinetry Millwork and custom detailing Material and finish development Completed or constructed projects where available Applications without a relevant professional design portfolio will not be considered.
