Lead Fiber Splicing Technician Totowa, NJ | Full-Time | Field Position High Point Utilities is seeking an experienced Lead Fiber Splicing Technician to join our team based out of Totowa, New Jersey. This is a hands-on field leadership position for a skilled fiber professional who takes pride in delivering high-quality work, can independently diagnose and resolve complex network issues, and serves as a trusted technical resource for other members of the field team. The Lead Fiber Splicing Technician will work across a variety of active fiber optic networks including CATV/MSO, enterprise, FTTH, FTTT and other FTTx systems , supporting both aerial and underground infrastructure. The work ranges from new-build splicing and testing to planned cutovers, troubleshooting, emergency restoration and customer-premise work. We are looking for someone who brings strong technical expertise, sound judgement, and a commitment to quality and safety. The ideal candidate is comfortable taking ownership of challenging field issues, making effective decisions in the field, and providing guidance, mentorship and technical support to technicians working alongside them.
Responsibilities:
Splicing, testing, troubleshooting and restoring OSP fiber optic networks Working extensively with both loose-tube and ribbonized fiber optic cable Performing both single-fiber fusion splicing and mass fusion splicing Building fiber splice enclosures from start to finish - taking bare cable through cable preparation, buffer/ribbon preparation, routing, splicing, testing, sealing, bonding and final mounting Working with a variety of cable sizes, fiber counts, splice closures, cabinets and network configurations Using OTDRs, optical power meters, light sources, VFLs and other fiber test equipment to locate and diagnose network problems Troubleshooting fiber cuts, high-loss events, bad splices, macro-bends, damaged cable, connector issues and other optical impairments Performing planned network cuts, migrations, rearrangements, maintenance and service-window work Responding to outages and getting active networks back online quickly, safely and correctly Working in handholes, manholes, splice cases, cabinets, terminals, customer-premise locations and other OSP environments Reading and working from splice diagrams, fiber assignments, network drawings and OTDR traces Keeping accurate splice records, test results and field documentation Leading and supporting other technicians in the field Coordinating with our construction teams, project managers, customers, network operator's NOC and service technicians, and other network operations personnel when needed
Availability & Schedule Requirements:
Due to the nature of fiber network operations and customer service requirements, this position requires flexibility beyond a traditional Monday-Friday daytime schedule.
Candidates must be available for:
Participation in an on-call rotation Night work during scheduled customer service windows Emergency service-restoration work Occasional weekend and holiday work Regional travel to customer and project locations Extended hours when necessary during major outages, network cutovers or restoration events
Required Qualifications:
Valid drivers license 5+ Years experience in the fiber optic telecom industry 1-3 Years of demonstrated leadership experience Proven ability to independently perform OTDR testing Hands on experience with aerial and underground fiber network deployments
Preferred Qualifications:
OSHA 10-Hour certification, or the ability to obtain it; OSHA-30 or OSHA-40 training is a plus DOT Certification and/or CDL license A positive genuine passion for fiber, telecommunications and the technical side of the trade Strong communication skills with coworkers, customers, network operators and other field personnel
Physical Requirements:
