Job Description

Mechanical Automation Technician About AuST Manufacturing:
AuST Group is a medical device design and development firm with broad expertise in minimally invasive technologies and a deep focus on cardiovascular catheters. Our name, "AuST," represents the gold (Au) standard (ST) and reflects our commitment to excellence in everything we do.
Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced full-time Mechanical Automation Technician to join our Custom Automation Development Group, which designs and builds custom fixtures and automated manufacturing equipment to support the production of cutting-edge medical devices. This hands-on role is focused on mechanically building, duplicating, sustaining, and improving precision automation equipment. The ideal candidate has a strong background in machine assembly, fabrication, troubleshooting, and mechanical systems. While some electrical work is required, including routing wiring, installing sensors, and connecting devices, advanced electrical design and programming responsibilities are supported by dedicated engineering resources. This position plays a critical role in building, supporting, improving, and serving as the subject matter expert (SME) for proprietary automation systems throughout their lifecycle. The role includes implementing and propagating design improvements, upgrades, and standardization changes across existing equipment deployed in manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities:
Assembly:
Assemble, align, and configure custom automation equipment, fixtures, and precision mechanical assemblies. Install and adjust bearings, linear guides, actuators, drive systems, sensors, pneumatic components, and related hardware. Route and connect electrical wiring and pneumatic tubing according to engineering documentation. Read and interpret mechanical drawings, 3D models, assembly documentation, and basic electrical and pneumatic schematics. Troubleshoot assembly and startup issues and provide feedback to support continuous design improvement. Support equipment installation, validation, and commissioning activities.
Fabrication:
Fabricate, modify, and fit custom components, brackets, guards, and machine hardware using shop equipment and hand tools. Perform drilling, tapping, cutting, deburring, grinding, and precision fitting operations. Verify components and assemblies meet engineering specifications using precision measuring instruments.
Equipment Ownership & Lifecycle Support:
Serve as the primary technical resource and subject matter expert (SME) for custom automation equipment developed by the Custom Automation Development Group. Provide advanced troubleshooting and technical support for proprietary equipment when issues exceed routine production maintenance capabilities. Diagnose and resolve mechanical, pneumatic, and basic electrical issues affecting equipment performance. Disassemble, inspect, repair, and reassemble precision machine subsystems and complex mechanical assemblies. Support equipment upgrades, duplication efforts, validation activities, and continuous improvement projects. Implement engineering changes, design improvements, and reliability enhancements on existing equipment. Propagate approved upgrades and standardization changes across multiple generations of deployed equipment. Identify recurring issues, determine root causes, and recommend design improvements to improve reliability, maintainability, and performance. Work closely with engineering teams to transfer knowledge, document lessons learned, and support new equipment development.
Qualifications:
Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) or equivalent hands-on experience assembling, fabricating, troubleshooting, and sustaining custom automation equipment, precision machinery, or complex mechanical sub-assemblies. Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience assembling and troubleshooting precision machinery. Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, CAD models. Experience using fabrication tools, precision measuring instruments, and common machine shop equipment. Basic electrical knowledge including wiring, sensors, motors, relays, and safe troubleshooting practices. Ability to work independently with limited supervision in a fast-paced environment. Comfortable working in an FDA-regulated environment and wearing cleanroom apparel when required. Physically able to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, and lift up to 50 lbs.
Experience:
5+ years building, troubleshooting, repairing, or supporting precision automation equipment, custom machinery, robotics, medical device manufacturing equipment, semiconductor equipment, or similar high-precision systems. Experience working with precision mechanical components and sub-assemblies including bearings, linear motion systems, actuators, drive systems, sensors, and pneumatics. Experience assembling equipment to tight tolerances where alignment, fit, and repeatability are critical. Experience with machine startup, commissioning, equipment modifications, and continuous improvement activities. Machine shop, fabrication, precision fitting, and prototype build experience strongly preferred. Experience supporting custom or proprietary equipment through ongoing enhancements and issue resolution is highly desirable. Experience implementing engineering changes, equipment upgrades, or standardization improvements across multiple machines or production assets.
