Job Description
Controls EngineerPosition OverviewWe are seeking a Controls Engineer to design, program, commission, and support building automation and HVAC control systems. The role focuses on delivering reliable, energy-efficient control solutions by developing BAS integrations, configuring network-level controllers, troubleshooting control networks, and collaborating with mechanical, electrical, and facilities teams to meet project objectives and operational needs.
Key ResponsibilitiesDesign and develop control system architectures, schematics, and panel layouts for HVAC and building automation projects.
Program PLCs, RTUs, and network-level controllers using industry-standard languages and platforms; implement BACnet, Modbus, Niagara, or equivalent protocols as required.
Configure and integrate Building Automation Systems (BAS) to manage HVAC, ventilation, and related building systems; ensure reliable communication across control networks.
Commission, test, and validate control systems and sequences of operation; perform functional testing, sensor calibration, and point-to-point verification.
Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and network-level issues in controls and BAS environments, including onsite diagnostics as needed.
Prepare and maintain technical documentation, control narratives, wiring diagrams, network diagrams, and as-built records.
Support startup and handover activities, and provide training and technical support to operations and maintenance personnel.
Collaborate with project managers, engineers, contractors, and vendors to ensure schedules, budgets, and quality standards are met.
Implement and support energy optimization strategies and control logic to improve building performance and reduce operating costs.
Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and safety requirements in all control system work.
QualificationsBachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Controls Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent experience.3+ years of hands-on experience with HVAC controls, building automation systems (BAS), and control system commissioning.
Experience configuring and programming network-level controllers and familiarity with protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, Niagara, and TCP/IP networking.
Proficiency with PLC/RTU programming, control logic development, and experience with common BAS platforms (e.g., Trane, Johnson Controls, Honeywell, or Niagara-based systems).Strong understanding of HVAC systems, sensors, actuators, valves, VAVs, chillers, boilers, and associated control strategies.
Solid troubleshooting skills for controls hardware, software, and network communications; ability to use diagnostic tools and interpret logs.
Ability to read electrical and control schematics, create wiring diagrams, and produce clear technical documentation.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills; experience coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and training end users.
Relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Controls Professional, NICET, manufacturer-specific certifications) and a valid driver's license preferred.
