Mechanical/Electrical Engineer This position is located in:
San Juan Puerto Rico Job Summary:
The Mechanical/Electrical Engineer will design, plan, evaluate and oversee the installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of HVAC systems, electrical distribution systems. Building Automation Systems (BAS), controls and healthcare infrastructure projects. This role woks closely with project managers, healthcare facility personnel, contractors, commissioning agents and government stakeholders to ensure systems are designed and delivered safely, efficiently and in compliance with applicable codes, standards and operational requirements. The Engineer will support the full project lifecycle, including planning, design, construction administration, testing, commissioning and ongoing optimization of building systems for hospitals, medical facilities, federal installations and other critical infrastructure projects.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • May provide technical oversight and guidance to designers, technicians, subcontractors, and junior engineers.
  • May coordinate and direct commissioning teams and field service personnel as require.
Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Consults with project stakeholders, facility managers, architects, contractors and healthcare administrators regarding HVAC, electrical, controls and BAS engineering requirements.
  • Designs HVAC systems, central utility plants, electrical power distribution systems, emergency power systems, lighting systems and building automation controls.
  • Develops engineering plans, specifications, calculations, reports, sequence of operations and construction documents.
  • Utilizes CAD, BIM and engineering software to prepare and coordinate designs and system layouts.
  • Designs and integrates Building Automation Systems (BAS), Direct Digital Controls (DDC), Energy Management Control Systems (EMCS) and SCADA platforms.
  • Develops control strategies and sequences of operation for HVAC, chilled water, heating, ventilation, air quality and critical healthcare systems.
  • Evaluates system performance, energy efficiency, reliability, maintainability and lifecycle costs.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable building codes, NFPA requirements, Joint Commission standards, FGI Guidelines, ASHRAE standards, NEC requirements and applicable federal regulations.
  • Supports preparation and submission of permit applications and regulatory documentation.
  • Preparation and submiss of submittals from subcontractors, vendors and suppliers for owner approval.
  • Revies contractor submittals, shop drawings, product data and equipment selections.
  • Performs field inspections to verify installation quality, compliance and operational readiness.
  • Supports testing, adjusting, balancing (TAB), startup and commissioning activities.
  • Troubleshoots HVAC, electrical, controls and BAS system deficiencies and develops corrective actions.
  • Monitors project schedules, budgets and technical performance to ensure successful project execution.
  • Assists in developing preventive maintenance programs and operational procedures for healthcare and critical infrastructure facilities.
  • Supports sustainability, resiliency, energy conservation and infrastructure modernization initiatives.
  • Prepares cost estimates, equipment schedules and technical recommendations.
  • Maintains accurate engineering records, reports and as-built documentation.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Abilities:
  • Thorough understanding of mechanical and electrical engineering principles related to HVAC, controls, healthcare facilities and building infrastructure.
  • Detailed knowledge of Building Automation Systems (BAS), Direct Digital Controls (DDC), programmable controllers and integrated building systems.
  • Proficiency with AutoCad, Revit, BIM platforms and engineering analysis software.
  • Knowledge of HVAC equipment including chillers, boilers, cooking towers, air handling units, heat pumps, VAV systems and related controls.
  • Knowledge of electrical power distribution, emergency power systems, UPS systems and critical facility infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with healthcare design standards, infection control requirements and critical environment operations.
  • Understanding of commissioning, retro-commissioning and system performance verification processes.
  • Effective troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills.
  • Ability to interpret interpret engineering drawings, specifications and technical documentation. Detailed organizational, analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail and professionalism.
The position does require travel. Air Travel and ground travel. Travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico project site. Lodging and travel to PR when needed will be covered. Our senior leadership would like to review candidates who have the experience and willingness to travel to needed areas.
Education & Experience:
  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical/Electrical/Industrial Engineering required.
  • Five (5) or more of practical experience in healthcare and/or industrial industries.
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 lbs. at times.
  • Must be able to travel to various project sites.
  • Must be able to access and navigate job sites and construction areas.
Work Environment:
  • Work is performed in both office settings and on construction sites.
  • Travel withing the region up to 20%.
  • Exposure to construction site environments, including noise, dust and machinery.
  • This is an onsite position, but remote work may be authorized.
