Controls Engineer II Industrial Automation and Motion Control Onsite | Woodstock, Georgia | Full-Time | Mid-Level | 3-5 Years Experience About Kirk Rudy For over four decades, Kirk-Rudy, Inc. has designed and manufactured industrial print and packaging equipment. Based in Woodstock, Georgia, we are a family-owned and vertically integrated company that handles machine design, machining, assembly, programming, testing, and support in-house. Our engineers can follow their work from the initial concept through a completed machine operating on the factory floor. Position Overview Kirk-Rudy is seeking a hands-on Controls Engineer II to develop, commission, and support control systems for our industrial equipment. Reporting to the Engineering Manager and working under the technical direction of the Principal Electrical Engineer, this role focuses on PLC and HMI software, multi-axis motion, I/O and sensor integration, device communications, machine commissioning, and troubleshooting. The ideal candidate understands
IEC 61131-3
programming practices and can develop and debug Structured Text. This engineer must also be comfortable working directly on machinery, performing electrical debugging, and determining whether a problem originates in the controls, electrical system, communications, motion system, or mechanical process. Key Responsibilities Develop, modify, and commission machine-control software using
IEC 61131-3
programming practices, including Structured Text. Design machine sequences and integrate I/O, sensors, actuators, HMIs, drives, safety devices, and other machine peripherals. Implement and tune multi-axis motion for homing, indexing, electronic gearing, camming, registration, and synchronized operation. Configure and troubleshoot communication between controllers, drives, remote I/O, HMIs, and other devices over industrial networks. Commission machinery, perform controls and electrical debugging, conduct root-cause analysis, and document software and configuration changes. Support manufacturing, service, and customers while maintaining installed systems built with Yaskawa MotionWorks IEC, Omron Mitsubishi controls, and Red Lion HMIs. Required Qualifications 3-5 years of professional experience developing and commissioning controls for industrial machinery or automated equipment. Working knowledge of the
IEC 61131-3
standard and demonstrated ability to develop and troubleshoot Structured Text. Hands-on experience commissioning and troubleshooting multi-axis servo motion systems. Experience integrating machine I/O, sensors, HMIs, drives, and other control devices. Working knowledge of industrial communications and device-to-device networking. Experience with industrial protocols such as EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, MECHATROLINK, Modbus TCP, or OPC UA. Ability to read electrical schematics and perform practical electrical debugging on industrial equipment. Strong systematic troubleshooting, documentation, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills. Ability to work safely and effectively around energized industrial equipment and moving machinery. Preferred Qualifications Experience with Yaskawa iCube controllers and Sigma-X servo systems. Experience with Beckhoff TwinCAT 3, EtherCAT, and Beckhoff motion-control products. Experience with PLCopen motion-control function blocks, encoder following, touch probes, registration, and high-speed product handling. Experience with automated printing, packaging, converting, web-handling, or material-handling equipment. Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, controls engineering, mechatronics, computer engineering, or a related field. Equivalent hands-on controls experience will be considered.
