With more than 75 years of experience supporting offshore and onshore energy projects, GIS delivers integrated services spanning traditional and renewable energy, industrial engineering, state and local infrastructure, and utility-scale solar development. Our work is driven by a strong commitment to safety, innovation, and executional excellence.
Position Summary:
GIS Engineering is seeking an experienced Plant Electrical Engineer with a background in aluminum manufacturing or heavy industrial operations to support electrical engineering, plant improvement initiatives, equipment reliability, and capital projects. This position will focus on the design, evaluation, troubleshooting, and optimization of electrical systems supporting aluminum production and processing operations. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of industrial power distribution, electrical equipment, motor control systems, and plant infrastructure, with the ability to support projects from initial engineering and design through installation, commissioning, and startup. The ideal candidate combines practical plant experience with sound engineering judgment and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, operations personnel, maintenance groups, and project managers.
Key Responsibilities:
Design, evaluate, and support electrical power distribution systems within aluminum manufacturing and processing facilities. Develop and review electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, schematics, equipment layouts, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications. Support electrical systems associated with aluminum smelting, casting, rolling, extrusion, finishing, and other production processes, as applicable to the facility. Evaluate and troubleshoot transformers, switchgear, motor control centers (MCCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), motors, generators, and other industrial electrical equipment. Support electrical infrastructure for furnaces, pumps, compressors, conveyors, material handling systems, and production machinery. Participate in capital improvement projects, equipment upgrades, plant expansions, and electrical system modernization initiatives. Conduct field investigations, equipment assessments, and site surveys to identify electrical deficiencies, reliability concerns, and opportunities for improvement. Coordinate with mechanical, civil, instrumentation, controls, and process engineering teams to develop integrated project solutions. Assist with electrical load calculations, equipment sizing, cable and conduit design, grounding, and protective device coordination, as required. Support equipment procurement, technical bid evaluations, vendor coordination, and preparation of engineering specifications. Provide technical support during construction, installation, commissioning, outages, and plant startups. Identify opportunities to improve electrical system reliability, energy efficiency, maintainability, and operational performance. Ensure engineering deliverables comply with applicable electrical codes, industry standards, client specifications, and plant safety requirements. Support preventive maintenance strategies, root-cause investigations, and corrective actions related to electrical equipment failures.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution. Five or more years of electrical engineering experience in an industrial manufacturing, processing, or heavy industrial environment. Experience with industrial electrical power distribution, motors, transformers, switchgear, MCCs, and associated electrical infrastructure. Demonstrated ability to interpret and develop electrical drawings, schematics, and technical specifications. Experience supporting industrial capital projects, equipment installations, plant upgrades, or maintenance and reliability initiatives. Working knowledge of applicable NEC requirements, NFPA 70E electrical safety practices, and relevant industry standards. Strong troubleshooting, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams, operations, maintenance personnel, contractors, and clients. Willingness to perform field assessments and provide engineering support within an active industrial facility. Preferred Qualifications Direct experience in aluminum manufacturing, aluminum smelting, casting, rolling, extrusion, or related metals processing operations. Familiarity with high-current electrical systems, rectifiers, DC power distribution, and potline electrical infrastructure, where applicable to aluminum smelting. Experience with large industrial furnaces, heavy-duty motors, cranes, material handling equipment, and production line electrical systems. Experience with electrical system studies, including load flow, short-circuit analysis, arc-flash studies, and protective device coordination. Familiarity with industrial automation, PLCs, DCS, instrumentation, and control system interfaces. Experience supporting plant outages, commissioning, equipment startup, and troubleshooting in operating facilities. Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure is a plus. Experience with AutoCAD, electrical design software, or power system analysis tools is beneficial .
