Position Summary Automated Machine Systems (AMS) is hiring multiple Entry to Mid-Level Controls Engineers to design, program, commission, and support industrial automation systems. We are looking for candidates at different stages of their controls careers. This may include an engineer entering the industrial automation field as well as an experienced Controls Engineer capable of independently owning the controls portion of a project. Responsibilities, project ownership, and level of independence will be based on experience and demonstrated technical ability. Controls Engineers at AMS work closely with Mechanical Engineering, Project Management, Assembly, customers, and other members of the Controls team to deliver reliable and maintainable automation systems. This position provides hands-on involvement throughout the equipment lifecycle, including controls design, programming, machine assembly, testing, installation, startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer support. We are looking for engineers who enjoy solving problems, working with industrial equipment, learning new technologies, and seeing projects move from concept to production. Primary ResponsibilitiesControls Design & Development Develop and modify PLC programs for industrial automation and material-handling equipment. Develop and modify HMI applications. Configure and integrate VFDs, servo systems, remote I/O, sensors, safety devices, and other industrial control components. Develop machine sequences, interlocks, permissives, alarms, and fault-recovery logic. Assist with electrical control system design and component selection. Review electrical drawings and provide feedback or corrections prior to panel construction and machine assembly. Develop controls systems that are organized, maintainable, and consistent with AMS programming standards. Participate in controls design reviews and project planning. Entry-level engineers may perform these responsibilities with support and review from more experienced Controls Engineers. More experienced engineers will be expected to perform these activities with increasing independence. Machine Integration & Testing Bring up and test controls systems during machine assembly. Perform I/O checkout and verify proper operation of sensors, actuators, motors, safety devices, and communication networks. Debug machine sequences and identify electrical, programming, mechanical, or application-related problems. Work directly with Mechanical Engineering and Assembly personnel to resolve equipment issues. Participate in internal machine testing and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT). Verify equipment performance against project requirements prior to shipment. Installation & Commissioning Travel to customer facilities for equipment installation, commissioning, startup, and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT). Perform controls checkout and system validation following installation. Integrate AMS equipment with customer equipment and third-party systems. Troubleshoot issues involving PLC logic, electrical systems, industrial networks, field devices, and machine operation. Make programming changes required to achieve reliable production performance. Work with customer operations and maintenance personnel during commissioning. Provide operator and maintenance training when required. Document remaining issues and work with the project team to drive them to resolution. Entry-level engineers may initially perform commissioning alongside experienced AMS personnel, with responsibility increasing as their capabilities develop. Troubleshooting & Customer Support Provide remote and on-site technical support for AMS equipment. Diagnose machine faults using PLC programs, electrical drawings, HMI diagnostics, network tools, and field observations. Develop the ability to identify root causes rather than relying solely on temporary fixes. Clearly communicate technical issues and recommended corrective actions to customers and internal teams. Support existing installations and assist with equipment upgrades or modifications. Project Ownership The level of project ownership will depend on the engineer's experience and demonstrated capabilities.
Responsibilities may include:
Taking responsibility for assigned controls tasks or the complete controls portion of a project. Coordinating controls activities with project schedules. Communicating potential delays, risks, and technical concerns. Maintaining awareness of project scope and identifying requests that may represent scope changes. Communicating project status and resource needs to Project Management and Controls leadership. Maintaining accurate programs, backups, documentation, and project files. Supporting project closeout and ensuring final programs and documentation accurately represent the installed system. Experienced candidates may be assigned complete controls ownership of projects, while developing engineers may initially work under the guidance of a more experienced Controls Engineer. Technical Qualifications Candidates are not expected to have experience with every technology listed below. Practical experience or education involving several of the following is preferred: Rockwell Automation / Allen-Bradley PLCs Studio 5000 / Logix Designer CompactLogix and ControlLogix platforms FactoryTalk View or similar HMI platforms EtherNet/IP industrial networks Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) Distributed and remote I/O systems Industrial sensors and instrumentation Motor controls and industrial electrical systems Machine safety circuits and safety PLCs Safety relays, light curtains, interlocks, and E-stops Industrial Ethernet troubleshooting Reading and interpreting electrical schematics Basic understanding of applicable machine safety and electrical standards Experience with the following is beneficial but not required: AutoCAD Electrical Keyence PLCs or automation products Machine vision systems Cameras, scanners, or laser measurement systems Robotics SQL, Python, C#, or other higher-level programming languages Linux-based industrial computers Industrial PC and edge-computing applications Integration with MES, databases, or cloud-connected systems Education & Experience Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation, Controls, Mechatronics, or a related field preferred, or equivalent relevant industrial controls, electrical, automation, machine-building, or technical experience . Entry-level through 10+ years of relevant controls or automation experience. Candidates with internships, co-op experience, technical school experience, machine-building experience, or hands-on industrial automation experience are encouraged to apply. Experience independently programming and commissioning automated equipment is preferred for candidates seeking consideration toward the upper end of the position and compensation range. OEM, machine-building, systems-integration, conveyor, or material-handling experience is beneficial. Expected Level of Responsibility AMS is hiring engineers across multiple experience levels. Expectations will increase based on the engineer's experience, technical capability, and demonstrated ability to work independently.
Developing / Entry
-Level Controls Engineer A developing Controls Engineer may work under the guidance of more experienced Controls Engineers while building the ability to: Modify and develop PLC programs. Read and understand electrical drawings. Perform machine I/O checkout. Configure sensors, VFDs, remote I/O, and other industrial devices. Assist with machine startup and commissioning. Troubleshoot controls and electrical problems methodically. Understand AMS programming and electrical standards. Communicate technical findings clearly. Develop the skills necessary to independently execute larger portions of projects.
Experienced / Mid
-Level Controls Engineer A more experienced Controls Engineer should be capable of independently handling the majority of normal project controls responsibilities, including: Developing a PLC program from an established project design and functional requirements. Understanding and troubleshooting electrical drawings. Performing machine I/O checkout. Commissioning standard AMS equipment. Troubleshooting controls and electrical problems without requiring step-by-step direction. Communicating effectively with customers while representing AMS professionally. Taking ownership of the controls portion of assigned projects. Recognizing when a problem requires assistance from Controls leadership, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, or another discipline. Assisting less-experienced Controls Engineers and technicians when appropriate. AMS does not expect every candidate to already possess every skill required for the highest level of responsibility. We are interested in engineers who have a strong technical foundation, demonstrate good problem-solving ability, and are capable of continuing to develop. Travel Requirements This position requires travel to customer facilities for equipment installation, startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and support.
Travel may include:
Multi-day or multi-week customer site visits. Early morning or extended-hour startup activities when required by the project. Occasional weekend work based on customer production schedules. Air and vehicle travel throughout the United States. Travel requirements will vary depending on project workload. Physical & Work Environment This position includes work in both office and industrial environments. The employee may be required to: Work around operating industrial machinery. Work from a laptop while on the manufacturing floor. Stand or walk for extended periods during equipment commissioning. Bend, climb, or access equipment as necessary for troubleshooting. Wear required personal protective equipment at AMS and customer facilities. Follow AMS and customer safety procedures at all times. Success in This Role Success at AMS will look different depending on the engineer's starting experience level. For a developing Controls Engineer, success means steadily gaining the technical knowledge and practical experience necessary to take on increasingly complex controls responsibilities with less supervision. For an experienced Controls Engineer, success means being trusted to take ownership of the controls portion of a typical AMS project and move it forward independently. At every level, success means delivering systems that are safe, reliable, understandable, maintainable, and ready for production while communicating issues early and working collaboratively with the rest of the project team.
Compensation Compensation Range:
$80,000
  • $110,000 annually, or equivalent hourly compensation Depending on the candidate's experience, qualifications, and position structure, this role may be offered as either a salaried or hourly position.
AMS is hiring for multiple Controls Engineering positions across the entry-level to mid-level range. Individual compensation will be determined based on relevant experience, demonstrated technical skills, controls and automation knowledge, commissioning capability, and the level of project responsibility the candidate is prepared to assume.
Expected hours:
Typically 40-55 hours per week depending on project and commissioning requirements.
