Job Description

Build and lead our electrical department. GutVann Architecture is a 25-person architecture firm in Howell, NJ. Most of our work is healthcare (nursing homes, rehab and post-acute facilities, assisted living), plus commercial projects across NJ, NY, PA and about 20 other states. Earlier this year we brought mechanical and plumbing engineering in-house. Now we're adding electrical, and you'd be our first electrical engineer, reporting directly to the principal. You'd run electrical design on projects from the site visit through construction. Most of our work is renovations and additions to existing, occupied buildings, so you need to be comfortable walking a building, figuring out what's there, and designing around it. You'll work alongside our architects and our in-house mechanical lead, in the same Revit models. As work grows, you'll hire, train and review the work of one or two junior electrical designers. What you'll do Survey existing buildings: services, switchgear, panels, feeders, branch circuits and generators Design power distribution: services, feeders, panelboards, load calculations, one-lines and risers Design lighting, branch power, receptacles and equipment connections Design emergency and standby power: generators, transfer switches, emergency lighting Produce construction documents in
Revit:
modeled equipment and devices, circuited panel schedules, conduit where coordination needs it Coordinate with architecture and HVAC/plumbing in-house Respond to plan review comments, RFIs and submittals Set up the department's Revit electrical standards, details and workflows Mentor and review junior designers as the team grows What we're looking for 8+ years of electrical design at an MEP consulting engineering firm, producing building power and lighting construction documents Proven ability to independently design services, feeders, panels, branch circuits and generator/ATS systems Strong working knowledge of NFPA 70 (NEC) Revit in daily production use, not only listed as skills Experience with existing-building renovations Able to work in our Howell, NJ office Monday through Thursday. Friday is a remote workday.
Nice to have Healthcare experience:
NFPA 99 essential electrical systems, and NEC Article 517 life safety, critical and equipment branches Fire alarm design (NFPA 72) Low-voltage and structured cabling design PE license, or EIT on the way to one Experience supervising or mentoring junior staff This role is not a fit for utility, substation, transmission, industrial controls, PLC, manufacturing or electronics backgrounds. We're looking for building systems design at a consulting firm. Why join us You build the department your way, with direct access to the principal and real influence on how we work Every project is laser-scanned before design starts, so you work from accurate existing conditions instead of guesses Architecture, mechanical and electrical all in-house, in one Revit environment Healthcare is a specialized niche where careful, buildable design gets noticed Four days in the office, Friday afternoons off and Friday mornings remote. We don't expect long nights.
