Job Description
About CCAT:
Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT) is a manufacturing technology innovation and readiness center focused on helping manufacturers adopt advanced technologies and strengthen their operations. We work with companies across manufacturing and industrial supply chains to evaluate, implement, and integrate the adoption of digital, 3D printing and other critical technologies. By leveraging engineering expertise in model-based definition, digital thread, and additive manufacturing along with technical evaluations, technology demonstrations, and hands-on training, CCAT enables companies to accelerate technology adoption and upskill employees to improve productivity and profitability. CCAT is a nonprofit, non-traditional defense contractor and government fiduciary dedicated to advancing applied technologies and strengthening the U.S. industrial base. CCAT partners with federal and state agencies—including the DOW, DOE, NASA, SBA, and USDOC—through government-funded and commercial programs that support both defense and commercial manufacturing.
Position Title:
Sr.
MBE Engineer Why This Role Matters:
The Sr. MBE Engineer supports manufacturers in evaluating, developing, and advancing their model-based engineering and digital manufacturing capabilities. This role serves as a technical subject matter expert in Model-Based Definition (MBD), Model-Based Enterprise (MBE) implementation, and digital thread technologies, with a primary focus on conducting MBE maturity assessments and developing actionable industry adoption strategies. The Sr. MBE Engineer works directly with manufacturers to evaluate organizational capabilities using the NSE MBE Maturity Index, identify gaps in existing engineering and manufacturing processes, and develop practical implementation roadmaps. This position requires extensive industry experience in MBD and a strong understanding of how model-based data is created, managed, validated, and consumed throughout the product lifecycle, with an emphasis on the design-manufacture-inspection (DMI) phases. The position also supports CCAT's Digital Thread Lab through technical consulting, technology demonstrations, industry engagement, and collaboration with internal technical teams to advance the adoption of MBE technologies. The position requires teaching and leading workshops for business and technical leaders as well as practitioners to assess and recommend MBE adoption practices. How You'll Make an
Impact:
MBE Maturity Assessments & Industry Consulting Support the development and execution of a technical consultative process that integrates into its technology adoption process. Lead manufacturer capability assessments using the NSE MBE Maturity Index, evaluating current-state engineering and manufacturing practices, identifying gaps, and establishing actionable pathways toward higher levels of MBE maturity. Develop and execute digital transformation roadmaps that incorporate MBD implementation, digital product definition standards, downstream data consumption, software interoperability, and workforce readiness. Support manufacturers in progressing toward Level 4 and higher MBE capabilities through targeted technology demonstrations, pilot projects, process improvements, and technical consulting. Facilitate technical discussions with organizational leadership, engineering teams, manufacturing personnel, and quality professionals to understand existing processes, technologies, and operational challenges. Analyze assessment findings, identify capability gaps, and develop actionable short-, medium-, and long-term recommendations for advancing MBE adoption. Prepare comprehensive technical assessment reports documenting organizational capabilities, current-state observations, target maturity levels, and proposed implementation strategies. Present assessment findings and recommendations to industry partners and provide technical guidance on potential next steps. Model-Based Definition & Digital Engineering Expertise Provide technical subject matter expertise in MBD, MBE, digital thread concepts, and related engineering and manufacturing technologies. Evaluate the creation, validation, exchange, management, and downstream consumption of model-based product definition data for clients. Apply knowledge of industry standards, including
ASME Y14.5, ASME Y14.41, STEP
AP242, and Quality Information Framework (QIF), to support industry implementation and interoperability. Assess and provide recommendations on engineering software and systems, including CAD, CAM, PDM/PLM, MES, ERP, and digital quality applications. Support the development and demonstration of model-based workflows involving engineering design, manufacturing planning, digital work instructions, and inspection. Identify opportunities to improve data continuity, reduce manual processes, and strengthen integration across the digital product lifecycle. Technology Adoption & Implementation Support Work with manufacturers to identify practical opportunities for implementing model-based technologies and improving existing engineering and manufacturing workflows. Develop technical recommendations and implementation strategies based on organizational resources, current capabilities, and desired business outcomes. Support technology evaluations, demonstrations, and pilot projects that validate MBD/MBE applications within manufacturing environments. Collaborate with CCAT technical staff and external technology providers to identify software solutions and technical resources that support industry adoption. Provide technical guidance to organizations navigating challenges related to technology integration, workforce readiness, process standardization, and organizational change. Technical Collaboration & Knowledge Transfer Support CCAT's Digital Thread Lab by providing technical expertise for industry training programs, technology demonstrations, and applied research initiatives. Collaborate with CCAT technical trainers and curriculum developers to identify emerging industry requirements and opportunities for enhancing MBD/MBE training offerings. Participate in technical workshops, industry meetings, and program activities that support the advancement of model-based engineering practices. Maintain awareness of emerging digital engineering technologies, industry standards, and best practices to support the continued development of CCAT's technical capabilities. Additional Responsibilities Support other advanced manufacturing, digital engineering, and technology adoption initiatives and technical consulting activities as required.
