Construction Engineer (BESS/Renewable Energy)
•This is a 1099 Independent Contractor position.
• Position Overview The Construction Engineer (CE) provides technical expertise, engineering field oversight, and quality control during the on-site execution, commissioning, and closeout of assigned BESS construction projects. Located primarily at project sites, the CE is responsible for bridging design engineering and field operations—ensuring that all civil, structural, electrical, and high-voltage installation activities comply with engineering specifications, design drawings, safety standards, and contract requirements. The CE serves as our Technical site authority, collaborating closely with our clients, field superintendents, project managers, subcontractors, and vendors to resolve complex engineering challenges, perform field inspections, review submittals, support commissioning, and maintain project quality.
Primary Responsibilities Field Engineering & Technical Support:
Serve as the primary on-site technical resource for all BESS, electrical, civil, and high-voltage substation construction activities.
Design & Spec Compliance:
Perform daily site inspections and constructability reviews to ensure site execution strictly adheres to approved Issued-for-Construction (IFC) drawings, engineering standards, and utility interconnections. Technical Issue Resolution (RFIs & Submittals): Identify, evaluate, and resolve field engineering issues, RFIs (Requests for Information), design conflicts, and non-conformance items on-site in coordination with external Engineers of Record (EOR) and internal engineering teams. Site Quality Assurance & Quality Control (QA/QC): Implement and lead field QA/QC inspection programs; witness critical testing, inspection hold points, equipment alignments, and field installations.
Equipment Mobilization & Technical Material Verification:
Perform technical receiving inspections for BESS containers, inverters, transformers, and switchgear upon arrival to verify conformance with technical specifications and storage requirements.
Commissioning & Testing Support:
Support site testing, energization, pre-commissioning, and final commissioning activities; track and resolve field punch-list items.
Site Safety Leadership:
Promote field safety culture and enforce compliance with
OSHA, NFPA
70E, local electrical codes (NEC), and company safety guidelines during daily field engineering tasks.
Field Documentation & Change Management:
Maintain accurate field logs, redline/as-built drawings, non-conformance reports (NCRs), and technical site documentation; support evaluation of technical scope changes.
Key Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Technical Problem-Solving:
Strong analytical and engineering troubleshooting skills with the ability to quickly address constructability and electrical design challenges in the field.
Field Leadership & Communication:
Professional, proactive communicator with excellent technical writing skills to present complex technical issues clearly to subcontractors, clients, and cross-functional teams. Collaboration in

Education and Experience Education:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Construction Engineering (or equivalent technical field experience) required.
Experience:
Minimum three (3) to five (5) years of field construction engineering experience on utility-scale renewable energy, BESS, high-voltage substation, or electrical power projects.
Engineering Tools & Software:
Proficiency with Procore, Bluebeam Revu, AutoCAD, Adobe Acrobat, and Microsoft Office Suite.
Technical Knowledge:
Strong understanding of single-line diagrams (SLDs), schematic drawings, NFPA 70E, National Electrical Code (NEC), and grid interconnection requirements.
Certifications:
OSHA 10 (or 30) and
NFPA 70E
certification required (training may be provided for qualified candidates); EIT (Engineer in Training) or PE (Professional Engineer) track preferred.
Travel & Work Environment Field-Based Role:
This position is field-based at active construction project sites, requiring prolonged time outdoors, field inspections, and hands-on site coordination.
Pay:
$100,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
