Job Description

About LUX dynamics: LUX dynamics is a Reno-based manufacturer of high-performance LED high bay fixtures. Guided by our PEAK values of Professionalism, Extreme Ownership, Always Do What Is Right, and Kindness, we build products and teams we can stand behind. We are seeking a hands-on manufacturing leader who can deliver today's production commitments while developing the people, methods, and systems that support our growth.

Position Overview:

The Production & Manufacturing Engineering Manager leads daily production operations and owns process engineering on the production floor. This role combines direct team leadership, technical problem-solving, production planning, and continuous improvement to strengthen safety, quality, delivery, efficiency, and cost control. LUX manufactures very complex assemblies, with more than 200,000,000 orderable configurations. All production is driven by customer orders. This environment requires disciplined control of order-specific requirements, material readiness, assembly methods, and capacity to meet each customer's expected ship date (ESD). The current production team numbers approximately 25, with four leads and one assistant supervisor. This is a highly hands-on position that requires a consistent presence on the production floor: setting priorities, coaching employees, troubleshooting assembly and workflow problems, reallocating resources, and stepping into production work when needed to keep teams moving and orders going out the door. Our current supervisory structure requires the manager to stay directly involved in daily execution. The successful candidate will be comfortable with that responsibility while developing the leads and assistant supervisor and helping build the management depth needed as LUX grows. This role owns manufacturing processes and production execution and works closely with three separate engineering departments: New Product Development, Application Engineering, and Quality Engineering.

Decision Making Authority:

The manager makes reasonable staffing decisions aligned with production needs and company resources, fully determines overtime, sets production priorities provided customer ESDs are met, and owns decisions on all production process changes. Production deadlines are established by customer orders. The manager is accountable for organizing people, capacity, and workflows to meet those commitments.

Key Responsibilities:

Production Leadership and Team Development Lead daily production activities through direct floor involvement, clear priorities, and timely follow-through with the four leads and assistant supervisor. Establish and communicate daily, weekly, and monthly objectives, monitor progress, and address obstacles as they arise. Coach and develop leads, the assistant supervisor, and production employees; strengthen training, cross-training, and consistent execution. Hold regular employee check-ins, address performance and attendance concerns, and partner with HR on staffing, accountability, and retention. Model LUX dynamics' PEAK values and build a team that takes ownership of quality, commitments, and results. Manufacturing Engineering and Continuous Improvement Develop and maintain standardized work instructions and production methods. Analyze labor hours, cycle times, bottlenecks, and line capacity. Improve assembly layouts, tooling, fixtures, and material flow. Lead root-cause investigations into production problems and verify that corrective actions prevent recurrence, partnering with Quality Engineering as appropriate. Partner with NPD Engineering to prepare new products for repeatable production, including assembly methods, work instructions, tooling, and employee training. Implement practical process improvements and verify their effect on safety, quality, throughput, and cost. Production Planning and Scheduling Maintain a rolling 30-day production schedule and a detailed seven-day schedule covering orders, materials, and team assignments. Plan production resources around customer orders and ESDs, material availability, assembly complexity, and demonstrated capacity. Make reasonable staffing decisions, determine overtime, and adjust resource plans to meet customer commitments and support company growth. Meet production commitments through effective scheduling, staffing, and timely resolution of constraints. Safety and Operational Performance Oversee safe equipment use and adherence to applicable OSHA requirements and company safety procedures; address hazards promptly. Coordinate quarterly safety walk-throughs with third-party consultants and follow through on corrective actions. Present safety findings, resource needs, and proposed solutions to leadership regularly. Monitor and report production results against goals, using timely information to guide daily action and longer-term improvements. Identify and resolve production issues, maintain efficient workflows, and escalate urgent safety, quality, or delivery risks immediately. Cross Department Collaboration Work with New Product Development Engineering on production readiness and manufacturability of new products. Partner with Application Engineering to clarify order-specific technical requirements and resolve application questions affecting production. Work with Quality Engineering to address nonconformances, strengthen production controls, and verify corrective-action effectiveness. Coordinate with Sales to anticipate demand and align production capacity. Work closely with Purchasing and Customer Service to address material availability and customer delivery commitments. Decide and implement production process changes, coordinating with New Product Development, Application Engineering, and Quality Engineering as needed. Obtain the appropriate engineering approval for changes to product specifications or component substitutions. Financial Management and Communication Understand how labor, rework, throughput, and production costs affect profitability and EBITDA; propose and implement improvements within approved authority. Provide accurate projections for staffing, capacity, and budgetary needs; administer departmental budgets and track variances. Resolve routine cross-functional issues directly and escalate decisions requiring leadership authority. When escalating an issue, present relevant facts and recommended actions. Escalate urgent safety, quality, or delivery risks immediately, even when a recommended solution is not yet available. Participate in constructive feedback reviews and communicate clearly with employees, peers, and leadership.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or related) or equivalent technical/leadership experience. 5+ years of experience in production or manufacturing leadership, including direct responsibility for frontline teams. Demonstrated willingness and ability to lead through daily production-floor involvement and hands-on problem-solving. Practical experience developing production methods, standardized work, and process improvements. Strong background in safety, production scheduling, capacity planning, and root-cause problem-solving. Ability to interpret production and financial data and translate findings into operational action. Proficiency with ERP systems and production reporting tools. Demonstrated ability to develop frontline leaders and work effectively across engineering and business functions.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in LED lighting, electronics, electrical assembly, or related manufacturing. Lean, Six Sigma, or other process improvement certification. A record of implementing systems and process improvements that increased efficiency and reduced costs. Experience preparing new products for production and developing supervisory capability in a growing manufacturing operation.

First Six Months:

The successful manager builds systems and develops people who can run them. Within the first six months, this person is expected to: Establish reliable production scheduling and capacity planning that reflect customer orders, assembly complexity, material availability, and customer ESDs. Create a useful baseline for delivery, productivity, quality, and labor performance, with consistent definitions and reporting. Implement a consistent process for resolving recurring production problems, including root-cause investigation, assigned ownership, corrective action, and verification that the issue does not recur. Develop team leads and the assistant supervisor, clarify daily accountability, and strengthen their ability to direct work and resolve routine issues. Why LUX dynamics? This is an opportunity to work directly with the CEO and make a visible impact on a U.S. manufacturing operation. You will help shape how our Reno production team works, improve how products move through the floor, and develop the people and systems that support the next stage of LUX dynamics' growth. This role suits someone who enjoys both hands-on manufacturing leadership and the engineering work that makes production better.
