Located in Fairfax, Virginia, Mason offers easy access to the scientific, technical, and political resources of the nation's capital. The Landolt Mission team is responsible for developing and executing a NASA space-based mission through coordinated, interdisciplinary work across science, payload, spacecraft bus, software, systems engineering, integration and test, mission assurance, and project management functions. The unit provides a collaborative research and training environment partnering with federal, academic, and commercial institutions. Mason Science is deeply committed to advancing inclusive excellence, access, and equal opportunity, fostering an organizational culture that promotes belonging, respect, and civility across our STEM community. About the Positions GMU is seeking two Postdoctoral Research Fellows —one Mission Software Engineer (SE) and one Mission Systems Engineer (MSE) —to support the NASA Landolt mission. While each role retains distinct core technical focuses (software development versus overarching systems coordination and integration), both fellows will contribute to mission design, development, testing, simulation, and documentation at a high level of professional involvement.
Execute the NASA Landolt Mission throughout its lifecycle, work closely with mission leadership and stakeholders, and co-manage daily operations, technical priorities, and resource utilization.
Design, Development & Integration:
Coordinate across subsystem element teams (payload, software, and hardware) to conduct trade studies, guide Interface Control Documents (ICDs), and oversee Assembly, Integration, and Test (AI&T) tasks leading to the complete space vehicle.
Simulations & Analysis:
Identify, support, and operate simulation and analysis tools to track performance parameters (mass, volume, power budgets, scientific performance, and risk).
Compliance & Standards:
Comply with all applicable NASA space systems requirements and procedures (e.g., NPR 7120.5/8), ensuring procedural and regulatory compliance alongside technical execution.
Documentation & Publishing:
Document activities through mission reviews (PDR, CDR, TRR, FRR, ORR), formal reports, and technical publications in professional scientific journals.
Research & Collaboration:
Conduct mission-relevant research under faculty mentorship, review relevant aerospace literature, and participate in collaborative meetings with federal, academic, and commercial partners (occasional travel required).
Inclusive Culture:
Foster a culture of engagement, diversity, inclusiveness, and safety, championing GMU's commitment to access, justice, equity, and diversity.
Role-Specific Focus Areas Mission Software Engineer:

Ph. D. or equivalent in Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with an explicit emphasis on space systems development.
Experience:
Demonstrated experience conducting systems engineering, software development, or technical design for a relevant project within the space domain or an equivalent high-reliability domain.
Knowledge Base:
Familiarity with systems engineering procedures, software practices, and NASA standards (or standards used by other major spacefaring organizations). Preferred Qualifications Experience with hybrid missions, operations planning, space hardware, electronics, and embedded system development. Direct experience in the design, development, and testing of space instruments, payloads, or electronic systems. Technical knowledge of remote sensing missions, optics, laser systems, spaceflight hardware, and/or space-application software. Track record of technical documentation and peer-reviewed publishing.
