About the Role We are seeking a structured, process-driven Operations & Industrial Engineering Intern / Co-Op to optimize our manufacturing workflow and establish our inventory management infrastructure. In this role, you will bridge the gap between engineering design and physical production—mapping material flows, organizing prototype assembly stations, and setting up inventory tracking for Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) systems.
Implement 5S workplace organization and physical storage systems (labeling, binning, kitting) for stack components, membranes, chemicals, valves, and piping hardware.
Workflow & Process Mapping:
Analyze material flow from receiving to assembly. Design lean layout improvements for stack assembly and sub-system testing stations to reduce lead time and eliminate bottlenecks.
BOM & ERP
Management:
Coordinate with mechanical engineers to align 3D CAD Bills of Materials (BOMs) with our physical inventory, helping maintain part number standards and ERP/MRP data accuracy. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Draft visual SOPs for receiving inspections, inventory cycle counting, assembly staging, and handling chemical-compatible hardware.
Kitting & Material Staging:
Establish a "kitting" process to ensure build technicians receive all required fasteners, gaskets, and stack plates in organized packages prior to assembly. Qualifications Currently pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Operations Engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing techniques, 5S methodology, and time/motion studies. Basic understanding of inventory management principles, Bill of Materials (BOM) structures, and ERP/MRP systems. Strong proficiency in Excel or Google Sheets (data organization, inventory tracking, basic analytics). Experience or coursework in plant layout design, warehouse logistics, or manufacturing process improvement. Prior experience in a hardware manufacturing shop, pilot facility, or hands-on laboratory environment is a strong plus.
