Job Description

Job Summary The Bridge Design Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is an entry-level structural engineering position responsible for supporting the analysis, design, rehabilitation, inspection, and construction of transportation structures under the guidance and supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer (PE). This role is intended to provide progressive technical training and practical experience in the application of structural engineering principles, industry standards, and engineering best practices. The EIT assists with all phases of structural project delivery, including planning, structural analysis, modeling, design, detailing, cost estimating, plan preparation, and construction support for new, rehabilitated, and repaired transportation structures. Projects may include bridges, tunnels, culverts, retaining walls, signs, signals, and other transportation infrastructure. Responsibilities also include supporting routine in-field inspections, evaluating and rating existing structures, providing construction engineering assistance, and ensuring compliance with applicable safety, quality, and regulatory requirements throughout project development and delivery. Essential Job Duties Assist in the structural analysis, design, rehabilitation, and repair of bridges and other transportation structures under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer (PE), including performing engineering calculations and developing structural analysis and design models using industry-standard software. Prepare structural plans, details, specifications, construction documents, engineering drawings, and CAD deliverables in accordance with
AASHTO LRFD
Bridge Design Specifications, applicable design manuals, and federal, state, and agency standards. Assist in the preparation of General Layout Sheets, structure selection reports, quantity calculations, cost estimates, engineering calculations, technical reports, design memoranda, and other project documentation. Review project plans, calculations, and design documents for completeness, constructability, quality, and compliance with applicable engineering codes, standards, specifications, and organizational procedures. Support senior engineers throughout all phases of project delivery, including planning, design, permitting, bidding, construction, and project closeout activities. Provide engineering support during construction by reviewing contractor submittals, responding to Requests for Information (RFIs), evaluating field conditions, and assisting with design revisions as needed. Participate in field investigations, bridge inspections, condition assessments, structural evaluations, and load ratings of existing transportation structures, including supporting Routine Bridge Inspections in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS). Support fabrication inspections and quality assurance activities for structural components incorporated into transportation infrastructure. Coordinate and communicate effectively with multidisciplinary project teams, including roadway, geotechnical, hydraulic, traffic, construction, and environmental personnel, to support successful project delivery. Maintain project files, engineering records, and technical documentation in accordance with organizational quality management procedures and recordkeeping requirements. Participate in internal design reviews and implement review comments to improve the quality, accuracy, and consistency of engineering deliverables. Develop technical knowledge and professional engineering skills through formal training, mentoring, and practical project experience to progress toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure. Perform other engineering, project, and professional duties as assigned.
Pay:
$60,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
