This position is responsible for developing practical, technically sound designs for complex building automation, HVAC controls, lighting controls, and related systems. The Design Engineer will serve as a key technical resource connecting Sales, Application Engineering, Design, and Field Operations. The role requires a strong understanding of engineering principles and the ability to translate project requirements, customer needs, specifications, and field conditions into implementable system designs. This is a hands-on engineering position, not primarily a drafting or CAD role. CAD will be used as a tool to communicate and document engineering designs, while the primary responsibility will be engineering analysis, system design, technical decision-making, and quality assurance. The successful candidate will also provide technical direction and mentorship to CAD designers/drafters, ensuring drawings accurately reflect the underlying engineering design and project requirements. This position is not a people-management role. Key Responsibilities Develop engineering designs and solutions for building automation, HVAC controls, lighting controls, occupancy-based systems, and related technologies. Collaborate with Sales and Application Engineers to understand project requirements, customer objectives, specifications, and design constraints. Translate project requirements into technically sound, practical, and scalable system designs. Review project drawings, specifications, architectural plans, electrical documents, equipment schedules, and other technical information to develop appropriate engineering solutions. Develop control concepts, sequences of operation, system architectures, equipment selections, control strategies, and other engineering documentation. Apply engineering principles to evaluate system performance, functionality, constructability, and integration requirements. Work closely with Application Engineering and Field Operations to ensure designs can be effectively implemented, commissioned, and supported in the field. Provide engineering guidance throughout the project lifecycle, including design development, implementation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and project closeout. Perform technical and quality-control reviews of engineering documents, drawings, and system designs. Provide technical direction and mentorship to CAD designers/drafters, ensuring CAD deliverables accurately represent the approved engineering design. Establish and maintain design standards, engineering practices, documentation standards, and quality-control processes. Identify potential design issues, conflicts, and constructability concerns early in the project and recommend solutions. Support Sales with technical input, project feasibility assessments, design concepts, and customer discussions when needed. Participate in project meetings and communicate technical information effectively to internal teams, customers, contractors, and other stakeholders. Serve as a technical escalation point for complex design, application, and implementation issues. Support field teams with engineering guidance when project conditions differ from the original design. Stay current with applicable engineering standards, building technologies, industry practices, and evolving controls technologies. Develop and maintain expertise in SmartCon's core technologies, including INNCOM by Honeywell and Lutron. Travel to customer and project sites as needed for site assessments, project meetings, design verification, commissioning support, and troubleshooting. QualificationsRequired Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited engineering program. 5+ years of relevant engineering experience, preferably involving building automation, HVAC controls, lighting controls, electrical systems, or related building technologies. Demonstrated experience developing engineering designs and technical solutions for commercial building systems. Strong understanding of engineering principles as they apply to building automation, HVAC controls, lighting controls, electrical systems, and system integration. Ability to interpret architectural, mechanical, electrical, and controls drawings and specifications. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop practical solutions to complex technical challenges. Ability to independently manage multiple projects and priorities while maintaining a high level of technical quality. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively with Sales, Application Engineering, CAD, Project Management, Field Operations, contractors, and customers. Ability and willingness to work full-time, fully onsite in Glastonbury, CT. This position is not remote or hybrid. Ability and willingness to travel to customer and project locations as required. Preferred Qualifications Professional Engineer (PE) license registered in the State of Delaware. Experience with INNCOM by Honeywell, particularly INNCOM guest-room HVAC and energy-management/control systems. Experience with Lutron lighting control systems. Experience with building automation systems (BAS/BMS). Experience with occupancy-based HVAC or lighting control strategies. Experience integrating HVAC, lighting, occupancy, energy management, and other building systems. Experience with hospitality, multifamily, military, higher education, or other large commercial building projects. Experience developing sequences of operation and control narratives. Familiarity with BACnet, Modbus, or other building-system communication protocols. Experience with energy management, energy conservation, or building-performance technologies. Lutron, INNCOM, or other relevant industry certifications. Experience providing technical leadership or mentoring to designers, drafters, engineers, or field personnel. Work Environment This is a full-time, fully onsite position based in SmartCon's Glastonbury, Connecticut office. Remote or hybrid work is not available for this position. The role may require occasional travel to customer locations, construction sites, hotels, commercial properties, and other project locations. The position may involve a combination of office-based engineering work and field-based activities, including site surveys, system testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
