Job Description

Reports to: Vice President, Space Business Unit About the Company Atomic-6 manufactures advanced composites for space, air, sea, and ground systems. We exist to put high-performance composites into extreme environments faster than conventional processes allow—higher fiber content, lower voids, shorter cycles, hardware that is lighter and stronger than the standard. Come build what must survive ocean to orbit and see your work perform in the field. Role and Responsibilities The Industrial Automation Engineer works on site to develop, maintain, and improve research and production work centers and processes. The role owns the mechanical, electrical, and controls design of those work centers.
Primary duties include:
  • Identify opportunities to create value by automating processes, including defining key process variables and process windows, performing ROI assessments, and developing concept solutions for the leadership team.
  • Manage work-center projects to deliver on time and on budget.
  • Design mechanical and electrical work centers such as composite cutters, autoclaves, and composite machining cells.
  • Procure automation systems and components used to build or maintain those work centers.
  • Assemble, test, and debug work centers.
  • Write Beckhoff PLC code, databases, backend, middleware, and GUIs, to automate work centers and integrate them with factory MRP.
  • Perform qualification and acceptance of new work centers.
  • Perform FMEAs on work centers and processes to drive low defect rates and high uptime.
  • Train staff on safe and efficient operation of work centers.
  • Drive continuous improvement of work centers and processes.
  • Protect export-controlled technical data and CUI. Minimum Qualifications The following are the minimum qualifications required for eligibility for this role.
  • Bachelor's degree in automation, controls, mechanical, or electrical engineering.
  • 4+ years of experience developing automation systems for production processes.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in CAD such as Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, or NX.
  • Demonstrated proficiency creating wiring diagrams.
  • Demonstrated proficiency designing harnesses and sizing wires and connectors for voltage and current requirements.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in design and programming of Beckhoff automation systems, including C#, ladder logic, and structured text.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver complex projects on time and on budget.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with process-engineering tools such as FMEAs and Minitab.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a small, dynamic team environment with minimal oversight. Preferred Skills and Experience The following are used as discriminators for candidates that exceed the basic qualifications above.
  • Master's degree in automation, controls, mechanical, or electrical engineering.
  • 6+ years of experience developing automation systems for production processes.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in design of experiments using Minitab.
  • Experience with autoclave design and operation.
  • Experience with composites manufacturing processes.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in GD&T.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in FEA of composites and composite tooling.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server.
Additional Requirements Ability to work flexible hours on-site to support builds, debug, qualification, and production. Travel to the other Atomic-6 sites and vendors may be required as work centers are installed or improved there. After-hours response is required when a work center or controls issue stops production. Compensation and Benefits Compensation will vary based on demonstrated proficiency in skills, professional experience, and education.

        Pay:
        $105,000.00 - $135,000.00 per year
